The News and Observer Raleigh Wed June 4 1986 11B Milsap weaves many influences into a memorable show Music review he came out from behind the piano to dance with his backup singers play a guitar-shaped keyboard instrument and jump on top of the Steinway "I'm the luckiest man in the world" he told the crowd "because I'm playing music which is what I've always wanted ti) and you're supporting me" BOB NowCLL DURHAM About 2000 people came to Duke University's Cam- eron Indoor Stadium Monday to see North Carolina native Ronnie Milsap give a benefit concert to support research at the Duke Eye Center Officials of the Ronnie Milsap Foundation established by the singer last June to help the blind and visually impaired said they were disappointed at the turnout' which they attributed to a limited promotional budget to the short time given to promote the concert and to the Monday concert date The concert which was not announced until May 17 was added to the end of Milsap's US tour Nevertheless the affection of recalled his school days at the NC School for the Blind in Raleigh (now the Governor Morehead School) and thanked his instructors there for "teaching me about all kinds of music" "I came there having listened most to country singers like Roy Acuff" he said "My teacher brought me to Beethoven and Mozart Then I discovered people like Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis My music today is a blend of all these influences" Although the music industry categorizes Milsap's music as country his concert underscored a variety of musical influences with much greater emphasis on rock and rhythm and blues than country In fact on most of Milsap's recent work only the vocals have any decidedly country character Milsap's excellent six-member band includes Bruce Brooks on pedal steel guitar which is per haps the prototypical country instrument But the pedal steel sound was mixed so far down into the overall ensemble that it emerged distinctively on only two numbers Other aspects of the performance more closely resembled a rock concert such as Kerry Marx's soaring lead guitar solo and the smoke bombs that went off during "Stranger in My House" and at the conclusion of the show The highlight of the concert was a medley of eight of Milsap's hits including older songs such as "(I'm a) Stand By My Women Man" and "Daydreams About Night Things" and newer hits such as "I Wouldn't Have Missed It for the World" and "There's No Getting Over Me" The only unfortunate thing about the medley was that some of Milsap's great bal Stallone's 'Cobra' retains 1st place in movie receipts lads such as "It Was Almost Like a Song" were abbreviated Milsap's powerful voice was equally effective on the quiet songs and the rowdy ones and he offered a friendly impersonation of Ray Charles that was so effective that a person with closed eyes would have sworn that Charles was doing the singing At midpoint of the show Milsap received a letter of commendation and an induction into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from a representative of Gov James Martin Milsap was animated throughout the concert At different times S1 St A MO NI ono ono owe moo men am IMPERIAL SHOWS "They're back" POLTERGEIST II The Other Side VILLAGE SHOWS (THE RALEIGH INN The Entertainment Capitol of the Carolinas 8 "Critters" New Line $689919 633 screens 4 wow ww ww wwwwi $97 million in 7 weeks THE 9 "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" Buena Kris Kristofferson Vista $504502 461 screens $596 million in 16 ONE 111r isonnC I NEM A 1 weeks produced for $15 million "TROUBLE IN MIND" -R- 1 8 14 in Pink" Paramount S490420 499 FOR 'NIIIIII 111211:21 screens $384 million in 14 weeks Vitarxe4 WEEK DAYS Joe Danny DeVito 2154 FUN 801rCARDINAC NATI KALI MOPING CIA II?
