Chef Thanu Sinevong, who sharpened his cleaver at the Mandarin Oriental in his hometown of Bangkok, turns out a dizzying array of fine dishes with origins as diverse as Malaysia, China, Japan, Vietnam and of course, Thailand. Service is incredibly friendly and adept.

The wine list, though short on sake, exceeds expectations for a place of this sort. 5920 South Dixie Hwy. South Miami; 305-668-8205. (Reviewed Poblano A welcome little upscale Mexican venture in South Miami that combines tasty and diverse regional cuisine with welcoming service and atmosphere. Proprietors are on hand to help describe such winning dishes as the chipotle and blue cheese filet mignon, ceviche or fish tacos paired with a just OK wine list.

Desserts including a shortbread-like mango tart and the lusty coconut soup are better than the main offerings. 5850-B Sunset South Miami; 305-740-9087. (Reviewed Town Kitchen Bar A jumping scene in otherwise quiet South Miami, this casual but grown-up bar and restaurant satisfies with an array of comfort food like plump burgers and truffled mac and cheese as well as more refined offerings such as Asian-style mussels and ginger-crusted snapper. Though execution is spotty, the food is usually good enough, and the prices are reasonable. A lively (and loud) dining space is always hopping, as are the young waiters who work the room like an aerobics class.

A value selection of 25 bottles for $25 is the saving grace of an otherwise overpriced wine list. 7301 SW 57th South Miami; 305-740-8118. (Reviewed: Two Chefs After nearly a decade, this upscale eatery has earned its stripes with food that represents the sort of old-fashioned luxury and value lacking in many hipper spots. The simpler dishes stand out: an incredibly tender filet mignon dotted with goat cheese alongside a creamy potato galette, textbook coq au vin, juicy barbecued meatloaf and mahi-mahi bursting with the briny flavors of the sea. For fans, offbeat flavors like butterscotch and mixed berries are as good as the classic Grand Marnier or Gianduja chocolate.

8287 S. Dixie South Miami; 305-663-2100. (Reviewed SOUTH BROWARD La Barraca Tapas Bar Overflow crowds at his little restaurant in Plantation prompted chef-owner Jorge Luis Fernandez to move to a much larger restaurant in Hollywood. Fernandez lavishes the place with same charm and affection, and you can expect the same authentic food, folk music and delightful service. Leave plenty of time for a wonderful progression of small dishes; meat, chicken, lamb and seafood entrees; specialty paellas (for two; allow 35-45 minutes) and a good stock of Spanish wines.

115 S. 20th Hollywood; 954-925-0050. (Reviewed: R. Beef Eater Steak House Casual cafe near Young Circle features Argentinestyle steaks, grilled meats and pasta. Steak is a little bland until kicked up with a potent chimichurri sauce.

Homemade spinich lasagna is yummy if runny. A small version of the traditional parrillada mixed grill is a great way to sample sausages, ribs and more. 1902 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood. 954- Billy's Stone Crab Restaurant Market Billy's serves South Flori-.
