SAN FRANCISCO, June a losing battle with ill health, Peter Clark MacFarlane, noted author and former actor and preacher, accepted defeat with stoic philosophy and shot and killed himself here last night.

The final chapter of his. long and brilliant career was written with 8.11 artistry as consummate as any played in the tragic termination of one of his novels. Walking to the steps of the San Francisco morgue, he pulled a pistol from his pocket, and with coolness and deliberation, fired a buNet into his brain. "BROKEN ON THE WHEEL." "I have been broken on the wheel of the soul's effort to express itself," said one of the notes which was found beside the body. "Nothing remains but to dynamite the ruins." Samuel Alden, a special policeman, was the only witness of the dramatic act which terminated the career of the noted author. "Mr. MacFarlane stopped at the entrance to the coroner's office and hung his walking stick over his arm," Alden said. "I thought he was going to light a cigar or cigarette in the shelter of the window there, but the next instant out came the pistol.

He put a shot into his left temple and just slid down wall and crumpled to the sidewalk." STARTED AS RAILROAD CLERK. Mr. MacFarlane was 53 years old. His career reached from his first position 28 a railroad clerk to that of a successful author, flickering for a brief before the footlights when he was an actor, and including seven years as a pastor. Within the past fifteen years he had written many volumes of fiction and was a frequent contributor to popular publications.

His best known works include "Held to Answer," "Those Who Have Come Back." "The Quest of the Yellow Peril." "The Crack in the Beil" and the "Hell Pavers." He was a resident of Pine Dunes, Cal, where he wrote the long and somber notes which form the closing chapter of his life. His first wife was Emma D. Garffeld of Santa Barbara. She died In 1908. He was educated in Florida Agricultural college, and later attended Berkeley Bible seminary, from which he was graduated in 1905. In 1909, pursuing his religious work, Mr. MacFarlane became general secretary of the Men's Brotherhood of Disciples Christ of Kansas City, and in that occupation traveled fifty thousand miles a year, accumulating the knowledge and experience which later became the basis of the entertaining tales which brought him a fame and a comfortable fortune. He continued his literary work an1 lecturing throughout the rest of his life. In 1918 he was sent to Europe by the Saturday Evening Post and traveled over the westerh with the American army in the months that followed.

The tragic death of Peter Clark MacFarlane yesterday in San Francisco brings to mind his residence in Kansas City from 1909 to 1911, when he was general secretary of the Brotherhood of Disciples of Christ, a national men's society of the Christian church, and editor of Christian Men's Magazine.

The offices of the society were in the R. A. Long building. Mr. Long was its president.

When the earthquake in San Francisco injured or destroyed several Christian churches Mr. MacFarlane was sent East to assemble funds for rebuilding and repairs. On this trip he met Mr. Long here. The men's society, formed shortly before at the international convention of the Christian church at New Orleans, was searching for a general secretary.

Mr. MacFarlane was available, being at that time pastor of the First Christian church at Alameda, Cal. Other members of the executive committee of the men's society, Thomas S. Ridge, Dr. B.

A. Jenkins, Fletcher Cowherd and F. J. Bannister, were impressed with Mr. MacFarlane, and he was employed, coming here in March, 1909.

He entered immediately into the Christian church life of the city, taking membership with the Independence Boulevard congregation at Independence and Gladstone boulevards, While active in the work of the society, he found time to devote to writing for Pearson's, the American, and other magazines, a notable series of stories, among them "Sergeant McCarty," a San Francisco police character, whom MacFarlane depicted as a reformer in police circles. His first wife died just as the family was removing here, and he was married in December, 1909, to Judson of San Francisco, ceremony being performed in the Independence Boulevard church by Dr. George Hamilton Combs. Mr. MacFarlane from the society here in 1911 and returned to California, but has been back times, once speaking at the City Club.

The expense budget total is $5.100.000. All of that sum has been apportioned in the budget of the various depart ments. It is probable that the revenues will exceed the anticipated revenue, as the mayor and joint finance committee were very careful in arriving at the ticipated revenue.

The budget does not include the water department, however, as that is selfsustaining and gets no revenue from the general fund. The budget includes $5,000 for use of the board of freeholders in writing a new charter. BURNED BY AMMONIA GAS. W. F.
