32A The News and Observer Raleigh NC Sun April 8 1984 Clash fans rock through third encore Fir7' Trb Al rig ggs2126T tklTn snap Quality Fashion Selection IL Linen 1000116iclaoisrerstem pecti Fashion Sale Ends Sat the 14th Music review UPER SAVINGS SALE ONE WEEK ONLY I announced Mick Jones had been asked to leave the Clash Strummer and Simonon said the move would allow them "to get on with the job the Clash set out to do from the beginning" That job seemed to be to stir people into action against complacence and apathy in general as well as evils such as war imperialism and oppression In their first Chapel Hill concert Strummer and Simonon used the Clash trademarks that conquered the United Kingdom and United States: good powerful driving music that got people dancing even if they didn't catch all the lyrics The problem the Clash will face now is how to direct their energy and musical power The next Clash album if another one is released should answer the question of whether Strummer and company can come up with something new or will just fall into doing reruns on Friday night the band's new and old members showed that for now they can have fun just treating themselves and their fans to a rockin' good Clash concert right down to the third encore floor in front of the stage Part of the concert was a welcome rerun of the early days after the Clash bassist Paul Simonon and the recently departed Mick Jones later joined by Strummer got together in west London Songs such as "I'm So Bored with the USA" and a full-blast delivery of "I Fought the Law" came across with enough power to cut through Carmichael's usual problems of echo although those who didn't know the words probably couldn't understand much of the lyrics Strummer hair pushed back in a modified version of the punkster "Mohawk" haircut shed sunglasses leather jacket and his guitar for most of the concert and kept the show's momentum going through some moments when it threatened to fall into repetitive anti-British rhetoric In September 1983 when they By MELANIE SILL Staff Writer CHAPEL HILL Here's the ending of Friday night's Clash concert: Band finishes second encore and leaves stage lights go up crowd heads for exits drums start thundering and the Clash storms back onstage for a third encore "White Riot" from the 1977 self-titled debut album that heralded the Clash's arrival on the London rock scene was exactly the right finale for the Carmichael Auditorium show It was a taste of the old Clash's Down With the Establishment fire and brimstone and a hint that the new Clash minus founding member Mick Jones has the energy and talent to keep the band from turning into a weary relic of England's punk rock era The Clash got a strong opening from the Accelerators with lead vocalist Gerald Duncan lead guitarist Chris Moran bassist Skip Anderson and drummer Doug Whelchel teaming up for a lively set of tunes from the Dolphin album "Leave My Heart" along with a few other originals The break between bands might have had a subtitle "Interminable Rap" with rap music picked up from a radio station blaring far past the point of tolerability The Clash stage set featured six television screens set up behind the band and two more on either side of the stage which flashed scenes of war soldiers and other kinds of chaos including a clip from the movie "Taxi Driver" during the show Guitarist and lead vocalist Joe Strummer led the Clash through familiars such as "London Calling" "Guns of Brixton" and "Rock the Casbah" stopping to introduce new guitarists Nick Sheppard and Vince White and drummer Pete Howard who joined the band last year Strummer also took a few characteristic swipes at popular culture rock stars who think they're "Hollywood celebrities" and "people sitting home and watching 'Dallas" "After all 'Dallas' will be a rerun and I'm not sure we will be" Strummer told a cheering throng that crowded the dance Turn Your Old Jewelry into Money Johnson Jeweler's of Raleigh is now purchasing old jewelry gold silver and diamonds Center Plaza location only: Crd ttfi Ilk r-TrTr (77-7-7771 1:: ii I -1- I FF Everything In Stock OUR CRABTREE VALLEY MALL LOCATION OFFERS YOU NEVER-BEFORE SAVINGS OF 33Y3 OFF EVERYTHING!
