2C The News and Observer, Raleigh, N. Nov. 4, 1983 Football report Horton may be OK for Clemson game From Staff and Wire Reports CHAPEL HILL Carolina running back Ethan Horton may be ready physically to play Saturday, when the 1 Tar Heels take on Clemson at 1 p.m. in Kenan Stadium. But, Horton may not see action, UNC sources said Thursday night.

Horton suffered a knee injury in last week's 28-26 loss to Maryland and underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove a fragment of knee cartilage Sunday. The junior running back, who leads the ACC with a 110.5 yardsper-game rushing average, did some running under the watchful eye of UNC strength coach Mike Marks Thursday. After the workout, sources said, team physician Dr. Joe De Walt said Horton was not sufficiently recovered to play now but did not rule out the possibility that Horton might be ready by Saturday. Tyrone Anthony is listed as the starter for Saturday's battle with the Tigers as he has been all season and junior Ray Littlejohn, switched from fullback this week to fill in for the i injured Horton, is listed as Anthony's backup.

The Tar Heels carry a 7-1 record into the Saturday contest, while Clemson brings a 6-1-1 mark into the game. Apps don't fool Wolfpack Fans shouldn't be fooled by Appalachian State's 49-0 loss to Furman two weeks ago, N.C. State coach Tom Reed said Thursday. "They've had a lot of injuries and have lost 15 starters at one time or another," said Reed, whose Wolfpack hosts the Mountaineers at 1 p.m. Saturday in Carter-Finley Stadium.

"They had an open date last week, so I'm sure most of those injured players have had time to heal and will be back for us. "I think we'll see a refreshed, re-grouped Appalachian team, similar to the one that beat Wake Forest earlier in the season." Reed said ASU's offense is impressive in that it features a good balance of passing and running, with individual standouts in freshman tailback John Settle and junior quarterback Randy Joyce. Settle leads the Apps with 469 rushing yards and an average of 4.3 yards per carry. Joyce has completed 98 of 179 pass attempts for 1,183 yards. Reed singled out tackle-linebacker Leroy Howell, a 6-foot-5, 228- pound senior, and outside linebacker Joel Carter, a 6-1, 204-pound senior, as leaders of ASU's "sound, basic" defensive unit.

Williams is top Buc threat GREENVILLE Junior kick returner Henry Williams, once again will be one of East Carolina's most potent scoring threats when the Pirates meet nationally ranked Miami Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Orange Bowl. Williams, from Tunica, continues to lead NCAA Division I- A in kickoff returns, averaging 31.9 yards per return, and is 13th in punt returns, with a 11.9-yard average. Williams had a 53-yard punt return TD nullified by a penalty in last week's 21-9 victory over East Tennessee State. That would have been his fifth kick-return TD of the season, tying an NCAA record.

The Pirates, 6-2, enter Saturday's game in good physical shape. Only offensive guard Greg Thomas, out for the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury, is expected to miss the contest. The Hurricanes, 8-1, will play without starting fullback Speedy Neal, out with a shoulder separation, and defensive guard Tony Fitzpatrick, out with an arm injury. Ross ready for 'new ECU' COLLEGE PARK, Md. Maryland travels to Auburn Saturday, but what the Terps will find there should be familiar at least to Terp coach Bobby Ross.

"Auburn isn't much different now from the East Carolina of years ago, except they're bigger and more skilled," said Ross, whose Terps carry a 7-1 record into the 2 p.m. game at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Ross was head coach at The Citadel when- Pat Dye, now the Tigers' head man, was coaching at East Carolina. Ross was 0-5 in games against Dye's Pirates. "Our defenders must play with great discipline because each guy is isolated and isn't likely to get much help," Ross said in explaining how he hoped to defense Auburn's wishbone offense.

Ross said the Terps are at a disadvantage because they haven't seen a wishbone attack that often, the last time against Clemson last season. Sloan wary of Deac defense DURHAM- Coach Steve Sloan says he's glad record-setting quarterback Ben Bennett will be on his side Saturday when Duke takes on Wake Forest at 1 p.m. in Groves Stadium. But Sloan adds, that might now be enough against an underrated Deacon defense. "Wake Forest is much like us defensively and has struggled quite a bit this year," said Sloan, whose Blue Devils snapped a seven-game slide by beating Georgia Tech 32-26 last week.

"The only difference is that Wake has kept the opponent off the scoreboard." As for Bennett, the senior quarterback broke the NCAA record for career pass attempts last week, running his total to 1,260, and is 36 away from former Stanford star John Elway's NCAA career mark of 774 completions. Thompson, who averaged 27.1 points and 16.0 0 rebounds in leading Brunswick to an 18-7 record last season, made the announcement at a press conference in Lawrenceville. "I think State has a great coaching staff, and the educational program there is superb," said Thompson, who plans to major in business administration. High School Athletic Association Division I playoff berths tonight.

Broughton, Cary and SmithfieldSelma are locked in a three-way tie for the Cap-8 lead with 5-1 league records going into tonight's final regular-season games. SSS is at Athens Drive, Broughton at Enloe and Garner at Cary. Should all three league-leaders win, a drawing would determine the Division I playoff teams since the Cap-8 has two berths for Division I this year. The conference does not have a Division II berth. Should one of the three teams lose, the other two teams would advance to the playoffs.

The winner of the regular-season game between the two playoff teams would be the No. 1 seed. SSS beat Cary but lost to Broughton during the regular season. Cary defeated Broughton earlier in the year. The No.

1 seed is much more desirable. The No. 1 Cap-8 team opens the playoffs with a home game against the winner of tonight's Fayetteville Sanford-Scotland County game. The Cap-8 No. 2 team plays at Jacksonville, the defending state champions.

Only two teams have scored on Jacksonville this year. In the Big: Six Conference, the winner of the Northern DurhamRoxboro Person contest: at Roxboro will be the conference champion. But both teams will advance to the playoffs, as the conference has two Division I berths. One team already in the playoffs is Ravenscroft. The Ravens travel to Enfield Academy in Whitakers today for the first round of the N.C.

Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs. The Ravens, behind running back Quanah Bullock, are the defending Eastern champions. Also today, Wayne Country Day hosts Halifax Academy. In the 3-As, undefeated Southern Durham, ranked No. 1 in Eastern North Carolina, already has wrapped up the Triangle Conference championship.

The Spartans will play the winner of tonight's East Bladen-Clinton game next week in Durham in the first round of the state playoffs. Triangle Conference member Oxford Webb will be in the Division II playoffs that also start next week. Webb will play the loser of tonight's East Bladen-Clinton game. In the 2-As, Franklinton and Fuquay-Varina are both 7-0 in the Capital Area Conference. If both win tonight, a draw would determine which team would be the conference's No.

Deacons lead tourney GREENSBORO Wake Forest took a four-stroke lead over Elon midway through the two-round Guilford College Invitational Golf Tournament Thursday, with two Demon Deacon golfers leading the individual scoring. Wake Forest had a team score of 294, followed by Elon at 298, Guilford Red at 302, defending champion N.C. State at 304, and Virginia at 306.
