6A THE HERALD FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 2005 OBITUARIES Malcolm J. Chatman, 59 Malcolm Junius Chatman, 59, of John Sanding Road, Franklinton, died Monday at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield. Born May 30, 1946, in Durham County, he was a son of the late Made- line Alice Privette Chatman. A graveside service was held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the cemetery at Ebenezer Bap- tist Church in Franklinton.

The Rev. Steve Singleton offi- ciated. Surviving are three daugh- ters, Mary Sue Ashworth of Youngsville, Cheryl Faye Hunter of Franklinton and Annie Rose Johnson of Wake Forest; his father and step- mother, Mack Junius and Pa- tricia Chatman; a sister, Alice Faye Medlin of Louisburg; three brothers, Edward Lynn Chatman, John William Chat- man and Charles Linwood Chatman, all of Franklinton; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. W. Homer Dudley, 67 William Homer Dudley, 67, of 4121 Godwin Lake Road, Benson, died Wednesday at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Born March 1, 1938, in Johnston County, Mr. Dudley was a son of the late Alvin and Lessie Johnson Dudley. He was an auto mechanic. The funeral was at 11 a.m. today (Friday) at Rose Gra- ham Funeral Home in Ben- son.

The Revs. Glenn Mc- Cullen and Billy Cashwell of- ficiated. Burial followed in the Johnson family cemetery. Surviving are a brother, Louis E. Dudley of Benson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Zachary W. Hollin, 21 Zachary Wayne Hollin, 21, of 501 W. Parrish Drive in Benson died Tuesday. Born April 13, 1984, in Texas, he was a son of the late John Wayne Hollin. A memorial service will be held later.

Surviving are his mother, Norma Gene Vaughn Hollin of Benson; three sisters, Samantha Rae Hollin, Carrie Patricia Hamilton and Anna Jenette Hollin, all of Benson; and four brothers, Benjamin Hollin and John Wayne Hollin both of Benson, and Jere- my Hollin and Jason Hollin, both of Houston, Texas. Patsy Johnson, 58 Patsy Faye Massengill Johnson, 58, of Hummingbird Road, Four Oaks, died Mon- day morning at her home. Born April 6, 1947, in John- ston County, Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of the late Leo Massengill. The funeral was at 2 p.m.

Thursday at Minshew Funer- al Home in Four Oaks. Surviving are her husband, Jerry Benton Johnson; a daughter, Gina Hope Johnson of Four Oaks; her mother, Ruby Strickland Coates of Four Oaks; a sister, Portia Gaye Snead of Four Oaks; and a brother, Steven Michael Massengill of Benson. The family suggests memo- rial contributions to the John- ston County Unit of the Amer- ican Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1544, Smithfield, N.C. 27577.

Alice B. Nowlin, 51 Alice Brannon Nowlin, 51, of Selma died Sunday. Mrs. Nowlin, who started her professional career with Williams Realty, was the first female general property ap- praiser in Johnston County. After several years, she start- ed Nowlin and Associates Ap- praisal Service.

The funeral was scheduled for 3 p.m. today (Friday) at McLaurin Funeral Home, 12830 U.S. 70 West, Clayton. The Rev. Jerry Hicks was to officiate, with entombment following in the Pinecrest Memorial Park mausoleum.

Surviving are her husband, Randy Nowlin; a son, Charles Nowlin of Winter Park, two sisters, Ophelia Thomp- son of Jacksonville, and Martha Carraway of Snow Hill; and two brothers, Bobby Brannon of Rocky Mount and Charles Brannon of Raleigh. Ruth Parker, 75 Ruth Lee Barefoot Parker, 75, died May 24 in Springfield, Ill. Born Oct. 13, 1929, in Sampson County, Mrs. Park- er was a daughter of the late Silas and Melissie Lee.

She was the widow of Herman E. Barefoot. Mrs. Parker was a homemaker. The funeral will be at 11 a.m.

Saturday at Fair Haven Church. The Rev. David Brooks will officiate. Burial will follow in the Barefoot family cemetery. Surviving are a son, Willie Glenn Barefoot of Pittsboro; a daughter, Angeline Severns of Oakford, a brother, Earl Lee of Benson; four sisters, Merlese Tart of Dunn, Daisy Griffin of Rocky Mount, Bar- bara Ann Forbes of Russel- lville, and Frances Bunting of Garner; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 till 8 p.m. today (Friday) at Rose Graham Funeral Home, 301 W. Main Benson. James W. Starling, 68 James Wilson Starling, 68, of Old Beulah Road near Kenly died Wednesday.

Born May 5, 1937, in John- ston County, Mr. Starling was a son of the late Lester and Eva Carter Starling. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, where he was an aircraft-mainte- nance scheduler. Mr.

Starling was a member of Divine Cross- ings Baptist Church. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Parrish Fu- neral Home, 1351 S. Pollock Selma. The Rev.

Danny Powell will officiate. Burial will follow in Selma Memorial Gardens. Surviving are his wife, Bar- bara Caudill Starling; three sons, James Starling II of Wilson, Johnny Starling of Selma and Tommy Starling of Kenly; a brother, Willard Starling of Rocky Mount; three sisters, Edna Godwin of Virginia, Rudine Maidon of Selma and Virginia Hoppes of Pennsylvania; and one grandchild. The family will receive friends from 7 till 9 p.m. today (Friday) at the funeral home.

The family suggests memo- rial contributions to Divine Crossings Baptist Church, 440 Little Divine Road, Selma, N.C. 27576. Reita VanValkenburgh Reita Leddick VanValken- burgh, 80, of Feed Mill Road near Selma died Monday. Arrangements are by Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. The funeral was at 1 p.m.

Inez Williamson, 95 Inez Bass Williamson, 95, of Lucama died Wednesday at WilMed Nursing Care Cen- ter. The funeral will be at 11 a.m.

Saturday at Coley Fu- neral Home, 103 E. Second Kenly. Burial will follow in the cemetery at Contentnea Church. Surviving are a daughter, Elaine Lamm of Goldsboro; three sons, Donald H. Williamson of Kenly, Ivey E.

Williamson of Arizona and Danny R. Williamson of Flori- da; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 till 8:30 p.m. to- day (Friday) at the funeral home. Dakota Leigh Woodall Dakota Leigh Woodall died at birth Monday.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. today (Friday) in Kenly Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Winstead officiated. Surviving are her mother, Samantha Woodall; and her maternal grandparents, Glen and Betty Woodall of Kenly.

Spears, 47 Carlie Franklin Spears, 47, of Princeton died Tuesday at his home. Born June 30, 1957, in Wilmington, he was a son of Noble E. and Alma Porter Overfield of Sel- ma. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Parrish Funeral Home, 1351 S.

Pollock Sel- ma. The Revs. Ralph Parker and Debbie Browning will of- ficiate. Burial will follow in the Price Cemetery. Surviving in addition to his parents are two sons, Daniel Spears of Bailey and Randy Spears of Princeton; a daugh- ter, Leslie Vick of Smithfield; four brothers, Wallace Spears, the Rev.

Noble E. Overfield Jr. and Steve Over- field, all of Princeton, and David Spears of Goldsboro; three sisters, Pamela Shirley and Penny Baker, both of Sel- ma, Janet Overfield of Kenly; and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 till 9 p.m. Sat- urday at the funeral home and other times at the home of his parents, 206 N.

Massey Selma. Harold E. Benson, 67 Harold Eugene Benson, 67, of 1910 Braswell Road, Smith- field, died Thursday morning. Born May 28, 1938, he was a son of the late Elmon Eu- gene Benson. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday in the cemetery at Baker's Chapel Church. The Rev. Joseph Baker will officiate. Surviving are his wife, Lyn- da Lane Benson; three daughters, Rita Faye Schoot and Becky Williams, both of Smithfield, and Vickie Lee Renn of Goldsboro; his moth- er, Edna Dean Benson of Clayton; two sisters, Elmona Stevens of Coats and Rachel Braxton of Greensboro; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great- grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 till 9 p.m.

today (Friday) at Casey Funeral Home in Princeton. A audience Lyndie Moe sings the National Anthem at a Denver Nuggets playoff game against the San Antonio Spurs. She is the great-granddaughter of Margaret and Lorton Twisdale of Buffalo Road, Smithfield. Lyndie is the daughter of Cristi and David Moe of Emporia, Kan. Her father is the head basketball coach at Emporia State University.

She is the granddaughter of Jane and Doug Moe. Doug Moe is a former head coach of the Nuggets and Spurs. He is currently a consultant and assistant coach with the Nuggets. Lyndia will perform this month in Branson, and she will sing the National Anthem at a Kansas City Royals game in June. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Candles blamed in fire Johnston County Fire Mar- shal Harold Henrich ruled Thursday that an early- morning house fire in the Cleveland community was an accident.

Henrich said the fire, which broke out at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, de- stroyed a doublewide mobile home at 396 Old Drugstore Road. He said the fire ap- peared to have been sparked by one or more candles left unattended inside the home. Henrich said the owners of the home had recently moved into a new house on the same property. They were plan- ning to put the mobile home up for sale next week, he said.

College Classes Johnston Community Col- lege has scheduled the follow- ing classes: 9 a.m. till noon Monday, June 20, on the Cleveland campus. Also, the college will offer the class from 9 a.m. till noon Wednes- day, July 27, on the Smithfield campus. The cost is $10.

Debt 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, on the Smithfield campus. Also, the college will offer the class from 6:30 till 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, on the Cleveland cam- pus. The cost is $18, and an op- tional textbook will be avail- able for $44.

7-9 p.m. June 14, 21 and 28 on the Cleveland campus. The cost is $15. Introduction for starting July 11 at The Clayton Center. The class will meet from 9 a.m.

till noon Mondays and Wednesdays through July 27. For adults 65 and older, the cost is just $2. For all other seniors, the cost is $27. NLT schedules auditions The Neuse Little Theatre will hold auditions for at 7 p.m. June 13-14 in The Hut on Front Street in Smithfield.

The drama, by Stephen King, has roles for one man and one woman. Production dates are July 29-30 and Aug. 4-6. In the play, popular ro- mance novelist Paul Sheldon is headed to Colorado to write another work featuring heroine Misery Chastain. Driving while inebriated, he loses control of his car.

He regains consciousness in a dilapidated farmhouse that is cut off from the out- side world by a blizzard. An- nie, the schizophrenic occu- pant, is his number one fan, and she insists she will nurse him. His legs are crushed, and he is virtually a prisoner dependent on her for care. Annie discovers that his new book is not about Misery, and she forces him to destroy it and write another. Thus be- gins descent into pain and degradation.
