By JOE TIEDE Clemson's Tigers rarely give up 29 points but their offense Saturday was potent enough to offset that liability With three touchdowns in less than eight minutes as a first-half cushion the Tigers overcame NC State's scrappy Wolfpack 38-29 before 47300 at chilly windblown Carter-Finley Stadium In was an uneven football game marked by unexpected turnovers penalties and big plays on offense State scored in the first minute and a half after Clemson fumbled the opening kickoff But the Tigers roared back to score on three straight possessions putting the Pack in a catch-up situation the rest of the afternoon With Tol Avery completing 22 of 33 passes for 246 yards and Joe McIntosh running for 113 yards State piled up 394 yards against Clemson's formidable defense But halfbacks Cliff Austhi and Chuck McSwain gouged the Pack defense for huge chunks of yardage helping the Tigers to their fifth straight victory "We're just happy to win" Clemson coach Danny Ford said "You don't win many times giving up that many points "Of course that's a tribute to coach (Monte) Kiffin and his staff They had a good game plan and just kept coming back at us" Kiffin was upset because he felt this was an upset opportunity for his team "We've never moved the ball so well against a good team like Clemson" he observed "We've got young pups on offense but they bite and scratch "The defense didn't do the job they've been doing But you can't fault them because they've played real well for us many times "To beat people like we're playing you've got to put it together on both sides of the ball" Even after Clemson took a 21-7 lead State was on the move most of the afternoon It cut the score to 21-16 in the second quarter and had the ball at its 41 with two minutes left in the half But a fumble was recovered by Clemson and the Tiger's Donald Igwebuike kicked a 56-yard field goal with one second on the clock' Then the Tigers scored on their first two possessions of the third quarter State kept moving but it was unable to make up the deficit Freshman Maurice Barnes pounced on a fumble by the Tigers' Terrence Flagler at the 19 before most people had settled into their seats Avery immediately passed 11 yards to soph Rick Wall and the Pack scored three plays later McIntosh went over from the 4 on a power sweep to the right A few minutes later a piling on penalty against State on a Clemson punt return gave the Tigers the ball at midfield They needed nine plays all on the ground before Jeff McCalrs 1-yard plunge made it 7- The key play came On third and 7 at the 35 with the Pack expecting a pass thin up front Jeff Austin broke through left tackle for 17 yards and the Tigers went on into the end zone with little difficulty A fumble by Avery that was recovered by tackle it was 14-7 with 4:30 left in the quarter: Clemson which threw only 10 passes fired its first pass on its fourth possession Eppley hit Frank Magwood for 16 yards and then came back with a 22-yarder to Kendall Alley Those plays sparked a 77-yard drive capped by McSwain's TD from the 1 on the first play of the second quarter State then marched from its 31 to Clemson's 15 A holding penalty and a quarter Maryland's lethal 29-point blitz had ended That was it game flecided The Terps impressing the Tangerine Bowl scouts in attendance could begin thinking about the Tar Heels followed by games with Miami of Florida and Clemson Bennett finally got Duke moving A at that point propelling the Devils 71 yards for their first score Medium-range passes dented the Terps' wide-tackle six defense and tailback Joel Blunk got the TD on the first play of the second quarter by going up-and-over from thel ards and Lewis zipped 15 more on was Tice again catching a 12-yard pass in the right flat and lunging over for the TD Tice figured his work was over but that was before a high snap on the extra point caused Esiason who doubles as the Terps' holder to scramble But Tice caught a makeshift two-point pass and it was 15-0 with 8:07 left in the peelod Seconds later 110 seconds to be exact the Terps scored again Jones a 5-10 junior came up with the first of his interceptions and returned it to the Duke 12 After an 11-yard burst by tailback John Nash Esiason squeezed over the right side for the TD With 6:17 still remaining in the first quarter the margin was 22-0 But the Terps who ended the day with 447 yards in total offense weren't through Taking over at the Duke 49 late in the period Maryland scored in just three plays A pass to Hill gobbled up 14 was Tice again catching a 12-yard luster away from the Maryland rout which came on the heels of a 52-31 romp over Wake Forest Cornerback Lendell Jones supplied four interceptions setting a more positive school mark while also tying the ACC record the 5-2 Terps tuned up for this week's big battle with North Carolina in Chapel Hill "Maryland might be THE surprise team in the entire country" said Duke coach Red Wilson whose Devils have four straight in slumping to 34 "It's definitely a three-team race in the ACC now with Maryland Carolina and Clemson and I'd say Maryland's even with Clemson "I thought we gave a good effort after falling behind 29-0 Take away that first quarter and it was an even ballgame but Duke's Ben Bennett after a miserable start had 228 yards passing Dodging a savage Maryland pass rush Bennett did hit 25 of 46 luster away from the Maryland attempts including 14 straight during the first half to eclipse his own Duke record but was also intercepted three times by an alert Jones was scared to death of this game and it was a heck of a win for us" said Maryland coach Bobby Ross whose Terps are now 3-0 in the ACC "Our intensity level was very good and we were as sharp offensively as we have been all season" The Terps' explosiveness in the opening period shell-shocked the Devils who had allowed only 24 first-quarter points in six previous games It was an entertaining show for an enthusiastic Homecoming crowd but a nightmare for Duke Esiason was on target from the start hitting eight of 12 passes in the period for 104 yards and the three TDs Bennett meanwhile was wild and high missing his first six passes before settling attempts including 14 straight down to narrowly miss the NCAA record of 15 straight completions It was Maryland's game from the opening kickoff literally when Tim Quander jetted 74 yards to the Duke 21 before a TD-saving tackle by Duke's Mark Moseley Three plays later Esiason drilled a 15-yarder to Greg Hill in the right corner of the end zone with the Maryland receiver some 10 yards from Brick Johnstone the nearest Devil defender Just 1:33 had elapsed and Maryland already had its initial working margin The Terps' next score came in a more methodical fashion with Esiason engineering a 74-yard drive Even two dropped passes couldn't stop the march with Mike Lewis bobbling one Esiason bomb in the clear at the Duke 20 Tight end John Tice kept the drive ticking catching an 18-yard bullet from Esiason on third down at the Duke 38 Two plays later it down to narrowly miss the NCAA By CHIP ALEXANDER --Staff WNW COLLEGE PARK Md Maryland is
