Sinclair Lewis. There was plenty of troubie lurking about when South was doubled at his two spade overcall.

Played at a duplicate tournament. West's double was aimed at collecting at least a 200. point penalty, more than the value of any part score available to East- West's hungry double would be a highly dubious venture at rubber bridge. A possible 200 point penalty would not justify risking a payoff of a vulnerable game. West led the heart eight to East's ace and the heart queen was returned to obliberate South's king.

With two tricks already lost. how. was South to avoid losing at least two more spades, his Film blends Chinese, American ways By JAMES CALLOWAY Staff Writer Toward the end of "Chan Is Missing," the movie's affable star, Moy, wonders whether he is Oriental enough to appreciate the enigma of the case he is investigating. He likes his mysteries to have solutions, and this one is not looking too promising. "If this were a television movie," he says, "an important clue would pop up about now." "Chan Is Missing" is not a television movie, and anyone expecting a cut-and-dried detective story will be as frustrated as Moy is.

1 suspect that is director Wayne Wang's intention. The mystery plot serves as a hook to pull us into questions about what it means to be a ChineseAmerican. On that level Wang suceeds and remarkably so, considering the amazingly low budget (less than $20,000) on which he made the film. Moy's character is no detective. He plays Jo, a cab driver in San Francisco's Chinatown.

He and his nephew Steve, played by Marc Hayashi, handed $4,000 over to a Taiwanese businessman named Chan on the promise that Chan would secure them a taxi license. When Chan disappears, the two Film review men become understandably alarmed, and they begin their own investigation. Wang and co-writers Isaac Cronin and Terrel Seltzer plant more clues than Jo or Steve ever find. There may be a solution, but that is beside the point. The most important clues have nothing to do with Chan's disappearance.

Rather, they give hints of the quiet conflict experienced by the characters as they are tossed between their Chinese past and their American future. Moy portrays Jo with disarming delicacy. The character, a native of San Francisco, talks sincerely about searching for an identity, although he often seems more secure in his identity than his nephew. Hayashi, by contrast, seems brash. His Steve is so Americanized that he has become almost a caricature, and although he never admits it, he seems to sense it.

He amuses friends and strangers with his imitative talent by caricatur-' ing other ethnic groups such as blacks and Chicanos. Like the characters, the movie blends elements of Chinese and American cultures. Much of the humor has a distinctly American offhandedness, but there is a quietness to some of the scenes, a meditative quality. Certain themes loop through the movie in a peculiar fashion. Elements of one scene often reappear in some other form, either as a clue or as humor.

Early in "Chan Is Jo and Steve patiently listen to a pedantic young woman explain the cultural differences between Chinese and Anglo-Americans. Speakers of English are interested in just the facts, she says, while the Chinese place greater emphasis on personal relationships. Later, as Jo continues his search, a Chinese man picks up on his name and calls the cab driver "Joe Friday," after "Dragnet" cop created by the late Jack Webb. The man yells, "Just the facts, man" through a closed door and laughs. We never see his face.

There is no personal relationship here. At the Carolina in Durham. Not rated but an is suggested for language. Colorado pilot hoofs it through the snow ELIZABETH, Colo. (AP) When Dan Michalak looked out his window Christmas Day at the huge, swirling snowdrifts, he realized there was only one way to get to work by horse.

So Michalak, 35, a pilot for Frontier Airlines, and his wife, Karen, saddled up and picked their way from Elizabeth, 35 miles south of Denver, through snow piled at least 3 feet deep to the nearest major road heading north. "The horses got a little spooky," Michalak said. "They were belly deep and had to break through drifts. They went very slow and cautious one step in a hole could have broken a horse's leg. "But I felt more secure than having a four-wheeldrive with chains.

I don't think a four-wheeler could have made it." After riding three miles south a half-hour journey -from their home, the couple reached Colorado 86, which was open to four-wheel-drive vehicles. Michalak caught a ride there and arrived at Stapleton International Airport about 7 p.m., four hours after he had set out and soon after planes began moving out after a 36-hour standstill because of the blizzard. Although Michalak's flight had been canceled, he substituted for another pilot and took some stranded passengers to Rapid City, S.D. Michalak said his wife, who took the horses back, had few problems on the return trip despite the treacherous conditions.
