The proposed land deal involves properties near Del Rio along the Devils River, the last river. The state proposes to give the land and $8 million to Rod Sander in return for his Devils River Ranch downstream. The item was pulled Tuesday from the Thursday commission agenda, but it will be discussed in executive session and at a public briefing today. Executive Director Carter Smith says waiting for more public comment is right and responsible course of Critics fear river pollution if more people visit the more-accessible downstream parcel and also question why the cash-strapped agency would spend almost all its land acquisition budget on the deal.
