12 GalcsbufQ Rfflistgr-MQi I, Golesburg, Tuesdoy. April 24. 1973 Nob Hill Suspect Held in Hospital MERCED, Calif. (UPl) - A man suspected of being the "Nob Mill rapist" was held today on $1 million bond on charges of killing two women during a two-day chase across California. John P. Bunyard, 27, a San Francisco truck driver with a long criminal record, was in good condition at a heavily- guarded Merced hospital recovering from three bullet wounds received in the chase. Detectives from four cities in two states — San Francisco, Merced, Mariposa and Stateline, Nev.—waited for doctors' permission to question him about a series of rape-stabbings Tim Hasten Sez . . . "IF YOU ARE NOT . RIDING ON PLEASE SLOW DOWN" SOUTHSIDE GULF 406 S. Chambers Galesburg on San Francisco's Nob Hill and a crime-filled, 500-mile chase last weekend. Bunyard was the chief suspect in three murders, 10 kidnapings, a half dozen rapes and three shootouts with police. Mariposa County District Attorney Richard A. Gimblin filed the first charges against him Monday, accusing Bunyard of shooting two women to death the previous morning at motels in the Sierra foothill town of Mariposa. Nancy L. ChaFburg, 55, and Helen Cramer, 65, apparently were killed when they refused to give the fleeing suspect their car keys or to accompany him, authorities said. Bunyard was also charged with two counts of kidnaping, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. Justice Court Judge Claude C. Walton set bail at $1 million for the ex-convict, who is also chief suspect in the stabbing death of Guey Yueh, 25, in San Francisco on April 15. San Francisco detectives said another badly slashed rape victim identified Bunyard from a set of eight pictures as the man who attacked her on Nob Hill. A half dozen women have been attacked in the posh residential district in the past few weeks. During the two-day chase from Stateline, Nev., to San Francisco and back across the state to Mariposa and Merced, where he was captured in a shootout, Bunyard allegedly killed two women, raped two others, kidnaped 10 persons after commandeering their cars at gunpoint, and had three gun battles with police.
