sake the football series with North Carolina should have ended a year earlier Saturday's UNC opener at hot sunny Kenan Stadium was not an occasion that will be remembered fondly by ECU supporters It was a full-fledged rout a parade of touchdowns by Kelvin Bryant that sent the Pirates reeling to a shocking 56-0 defeat Carolina playing before a home crowd of 51300 steamed up and down the stadium Atlantic Coast Conference record by scoring six touchdowns He racked up 211 yards in 19 carries before leaving the game for good with 7:14 remaining in the third quarter Meanwhile a Tar Heel defense with six new starters totally strangled East Carolina's wishbone attack The Pirates made one drive of any consequence pleted only one pass and ended up without a point for the first time since 1971 a span of 110 games When the Carolina whip mercifully stopped crack ing coach Dick Crum was as emotional as ever "It was a pretty good opener" he said evenly "We were a little rusty at first but then we managed to get things going We hadn't scrimmaged in 10 days and that had something to do with it" As far as Ed Emory was concerned Crum didn't need to apologize "We just got embarrased in every way a football team can be today" the East Carolina coach said "I'm totally embarrased that we didn't play better I felt this team was as well prepared as any I've ever had On paper we are not as good as they are but I thought we could play with emotion and compete But we didn't" It was a tight ball game for five minutes East Carolina fought the Tar Heels on even terms for the first two possessions and actually nailed them for minus yardage during that time But once the Big Blue started to roll it was like a tidalwave engulfed the Pirates Carolina scored on an 82-yard drive added four touchdowns Conference He couldn't say otherwise Saturday night after the Lexington rookie rushed for 220 yards leading the Wolfpack to a 28-23 victory over stubborn Wake Forest before 29000 fans at the Deacs' Groves Stadium McIntosh was easily the difference in the first Atlantic Coast 1 Conference game of the Season an action-packed contest sprinkled with big plays State which nipped Richmond in its opener last week raised its overall record to 2-0 while the Deacs fell to 0-2 "McIntosh ran the ball well" Kiffin said of the frost) who carried 25 times and scored two TDs including one on a 38-yard third-quarter dash through the Wake defense that provided State's victory cushion "Joe did some things I didn't really expect him to do "The guy broke some tackles" Kiffin added "He's a doggone good one tell you that" Still it took more than McIntosh to subdue the Deacs who trailed 21-6 in the first half 21-12 at halftime 28-12 at the start of the fourth quarter and had the ball and two chances to win in the final two minutes of the contest "We were ahead of them pretty good and I thought we had them down" said Kiffin "I thought they'd stay down but they didn't" The Deacons were deep in the hole after McIntosh's third-quarter TD State's only score of the second half But trailing 28-12 and operating deep in their own terri tory the Deacs relied on some third-down magic from quarter backs Gary Schofield and David Webber to claw their way bock into contention With Webber hitting two key third-down passes 12 yards to Bill Ruffner and 9 yards to Wayne Baumgardner Wake marched 65 yards in 11 plays And on third down naturally Wayne McMillan sliced off the right side for 10 yards and a TD Webber then hit Leo Leitner who made a neat over-the-shoulder catch in the left corner of the end zone for the two-point conversion that cut State's lead to 28-20 Four plays later after linebacker Joel Triplett recovered a State fumble at the Wake 45 the Deau were back in business Schofield hit Baumgardner for 15 yards then on successive third downs passed to Ruffner for 17 and 9 yards to the Wolfpack 6 But the drive stalled and with 5:17 to go Wake settled for Phil Denfeld's field goal that
