Giddens, Durham Life's vice president for news, will serve as acting news director until a replacement is found. WPTF's local news scored poorly in the Nielsen ratings during November "sweeps," FCC backs reducing AM channel spacing WASHINGTON (UPI) The Federal Communications Commission has voted to reduce channel spacing on the AM band, an action that could lead to the authorization of an additional 1,400 fulltime stations. The action would promote an increase in station ownership and a greater diversity of programing, an FCC spokesman said Thursday. The unanimous -FCC recommendation of this week must be approved by the State Department and submitted to an Regional Administrative Radio Conference of the Western Hemisphere in Buenos Aires next March. The commission voted to recommend a reduction 1 in channel spacing from 10 to 9 kilohertz on the AM broadast band. A kilohertz is 1,000 cycles per second.

About 2,250 stations are assigned to the AM broadcast band, with 107 channels spaced at 10 ki-1 lohertz intervals ranging 540 on the left of a radio dial to 1605 kilohertz.
