Freeman found a hole in the center of the Carolina line and churned down to the Tar Heel's 33 with Bunting saving the day momentarily by making the tackle after Freeman had eluded Justice Freeman carried down again to the Carolina 28 and on the next play Roshto running hard and with good blocking crossed the Tar Heels' goal The Tar Heels started another drive but it bogged down on tin-ir 48 aatn in the third period when they drove to the Tigers' 25 but LSU halted it when Lee Hedges intercepted a pass near the LSU goal line and ran it out to the LSU 17 Hayes made the catch of the game during this Carolina drive when he made a one-handed snatch of a Justice aerial and then carried several would-be tacklers another 10 yards before being dropped to the ground i Neither team was able to senrp any more until the game reached its waning minutes Defeat came for Carolina in the fourth period when the Tigers took over on downs on their own 23 Baggett picked up five yrds and repeated State's luckless Wolfpack again yesterday gave their favored opposition a full afternoon of football but couldn't find the winning formula as the University of Maryland scored a hard-earned 14-6 decision before a Homecoming Day crowd of 15000 at Riddick Stadium Coach Beattie Feathers State team outbattled the rangy Maryland eleven in the line but couldn't find the needed punch on attack to break its string of defeats which now reaches to five this season The State line held the vaunted Old Liners on all but one occasion and did not permit Jim Tatum's split-T tactics to effect a first-down in the second half State Takes Lead The Wolfpack jumped into a 6-0 lead in the first quarter but U'm gave up a touchdown to Maryland in the second period and fell behind 7-6 when Tackle Bob Dean successfully kicked the extra point In the second half it was all State but the Wolfpack couldn't make good on two excellent scoring opportunities as a good Maryland defense rose to the occasion Stat then gave Maryland a gift touchdown when Dave Cianelli a defensive back intercepted an Ed Mooney pass and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown without a hand being laid upon him Jim Tatum's Maryland teams thus broke into the win column against Big Four opposition for the first time but the Old Liners were not as impressive as they were in their easy victories over Virginia Tech and Georgetown So well did the State line play in the second half that Maryland had the ball for only 15 plays all of which started from deep in its own territory But even with State dominating the play so completely the Wolfpack couldn't score after the intermission nd Maryland was adding seven points to its total on the pass interception Threats Stopped In the third period State got a first-down on the Maryland 9 with a sustained drive from its 45 but a combination of penalties and a stout Maryland defense set it back to the Terps' 49 on fourth down In the final quarter the Wolfpack moved to a first-down on the 2 but the Maryland defenders again were unmovable and took over on dawns on its 14 State ground out its yardage in small portions in the second half as it kept the ball away from Maryland but these tactics left it without the necessary punch when the goal was in sight Lead In Figures State had the edge in first-downs rushing yardages and passing The Wolfpack had 15 first-and-tens to only five for Maryland all of which were in the first half The strong Maryland running attack was held to a net of 63 yards by the stubborn State Lne The Wolfpack meanwhile was getting a net of 75 yards on the ground In passing Maryland had only 75 yards to 101 for State But a pass interception for on Maryland touchdown provided tha blow which put a victory out ol reach of the Wolfpack Seldom is a Maryland team held so well yet State couldn't make good on its scoring chances and went down to defeat Quick Start State showed right from the beginning that Maryland wasn't goinf to have a romp and that their advance two-touchdown margin was not going to be upheld Maryland received the opening kickoff but couldn't gin Earl Roth punted from his 45 to George Mc-Arthur on the State 11 He returned to the State 23 The Wolfpack put together two first-downs but finally was stopped on its 43 from which point Ogden Smith who did a good job of kicking punted out on the Maryland 21 The rugged State line again held Maryland for downs and Roth kicked to midfleld From here the Wolfpack moved for its touchdown with little Ed Mooney bearing the See TERPS Page Three Still 44000 in Tiger Stadium The Bayou Bengals led by big Fullback Zollie Toth a senior from Pocahonta Va and Halfback Jim Roshto a home town boy 6cored once each in the second half to overcome a Carolina lead 7-0 and bring the Tigera their third win of the season Coach Carl Snavely'i Tar Heels showed their might only once in tonight's big upset and that came in the second quarter on a 97-yard sustained march down field led by Charlie (Choo Choo) Justice and Fullback Billy Hayes Hayes passed to Art Weiner from the LSU 5-yard stripe for the first score of the game and Egbert Williams added the extra point Titers Rally The aroused Tigers had things all to themselves in the second half as far as scoring was concerned They cored early in the third quarter on the fourth play when Roshto scooted right end for 28 yards and the touchdown behind beautiful blocking Toth a giant-sized hard-running back ripped the Tar Heels' line for the game winning tally when he plunged over from the one-foot line standing up climaxing an 82-yard cive Nick Roussos added the extra point with only four minutes and 13 seconds left in the game The Tar Heels' usual ability to come out on top reached the end of the line tonight as the Tigers keyed to fever pitch and catching the spirit of the 44100 fans turned the second half into an a 11 -LSU offensive maneuver The Bengal triumphs dropped the nation's No 6 grid power down among the also-runs in the biggest upset on Saturday's Dixie football program Didn't Need Rain Coach Gaynell (Gus) Tinseley who did a terrific job in preparing his squad for All-America Justice and the Tar Heels didn't need the rain he had been praying for The slashing and deceptive Tiger attack on offense and its stout defense more than took care of Carolina The two squads battled under cloudy skies arid shirt-sleeve weather throughout the game Undoubtedly the strong Tar Heels found the Tigers their most rugeed opponent of the current campaign Coach Tinsley's Ticers unleashed an attack that wouldn't be denied Justice Bottled Up On defense th LSU Bengals held Justice to an average of 44 yards in nuhing Jor 11 attempts Pull- -x ooc rfVsV 5i Grid Results
