Junior Mark Schubert kicked a 28-yard field goal with 3:09 left in the game Saturday to spark Pittsburgh to an 18-17 victory over Syracuse. The Panthers, 10-point favorites going into the game, set up their narrow East victory by gambling on a 2- point conversion early in the fourth period, which closed the Orangemen's lead to two points at 17-15.

Syracuse's hope of scoring again in the final minutes faded when, on its own 45-yard line, Coach Frank Maloney and sophomore quarterback Tim Wilson couldn't get a play called properly and were penalized for calling two time outs in a row.
