Reports from over the county indicatb that farmers are getting their land in splendid condition for: the spring planting. One gentleman told us this week that farms in his section were in better condition at this time than he had" ever seen them and that farmers were more interested in theirwork than ever betore. This is certainly -and we look for record crops in Madison county this year. Madison is a farming county, rich in all the essentials that go toward making farming success, arid a system of careful improvement, preparation and cultivation of farmj lands would make it one of the richest counties in the Surely our farming class cannot and will not the effort when it means vast revenues to them in the way of larger crops at better prices, and improved lands which make larger and better crops posille with less work and less expense. So let us get busy.

The harvest will never ripen unless it is planted. Nature alone cannot fill your crib, but she will do her part if you will do yours, and the gathering will show how you have sown. 1)0 THE PEOPLE RULE Not if the' Democratic Hachine Can Sale of Land for Taxes. I read in the "ecord that our Republican frl get very lib eralwhenthev some' tjung for theni- juC uen it comes to giV4- Democrats representation they are not quite so liberal- for instance the tax listers.

The Record says there has not been a Democratic lister or assessor? ns fas back as rthe memory runneth. Now if they will turn oyer on the other side and see how far their memory runneth they 'Will soon.see how liberal our friends have been. We once had'our County Com missioners appointed by the Legislature and who did they ap-! point? Democrats Then they undertook to appoint a Clerk of. the Court, and who did they A Democrat! We will come op a little further down. We have a Board of Ed ucation "applnted" and of whom is it composed? Democrats will go still farther.

We have a county Superintendent of Schools "appinted" just to take the office out of peptics, and yet he is "appinted because heis a Democrat In our common schools we have three committeemen "appinted" and we wonder Jiow many of them are Republic ans. It was refreshing to. a citizen of? the county to look upon this large representative body of citizens of the county of Madison ancftto know that they were giving their suppoiC and encouragement to the new road law and to the efforts of the Commissioners" to improve the roads of the county. The Road Commissioners will be handicapped in their work of building and imprdving roads for the first year on account of the scarcity of road iunds, but the! citizens should not be disheartened if a great many new roads are not made this year; but next year when the new levy is collected for roads there will be a great deal expected of the Road Commissioners in the way of road building.

While there was a road tax levied last year arid a very good sum collected for road purposes, but $2000 of that money was transferred by the Board Of Commissioners of the county to the Pauper fund," as I am informed, and will noti be at the command of the new Road Commissioners, but as I understand the statute now regarding the road fund that whatever is levied and collected for public roads cannot, be used for any other purpose than on roads. With a system of good roads and the proper, attention given by the farmers to their farms in the county, will make the county one among the best in the State. C. B. The last Legislature clearly demonstrated that the Democrat ic party in this State is afraid to trust the people with their own government. The News and Observer of March 21st discloses the disgraceful fact the Legislature has appointed one thousand four hundred ana thirty one justices of the peace in the Slate, notwithstanding the peo- pie have elected their justices throughout the State, What justification is there for this outrageous destruction of local self-government? Absolute- ly If the law does not pro vide for the election of a sufficient number of justices the ture should have amended the law so that the people could name them at the polls, i There are three reasons why these justices were appointed over those elected by the people, and only three. In Republican territory they were appointed to thwart the will of the people and punish them for daring to oppose the will of the Democracy; in some instances appointments were made to pay off campaign Obligations and reward the and in still otheteases these appointments went to weak-kneed fellows in the hope that they could thus be soft-soaped and kept raJine. There was absolutely no justification for this i ca the part of the Legisla-t ro fi'-l msry riht thinking i v. ill spurn these appoint- le in deSance of the 'i expressed will.
