Mr. EDITOR- Dear Sir: -Permit me through your columns, to express my regrets for the "unfortunate affair" to which reference is made in your last paper, over the signature of J. H. Mao El Rey. No statement or explanation is deemed necessary to those who were present on the occasion, but, to prevent mistakes upon the part of those of your readers who were not there, a A word will not perhaps be out of place.

No disposition is felt to call in question the averments of Mr. Mac El Rey as to the honesty of his intention, or tions of duty. This was distinctly accorded to him, in the remarks complained of, as an "attempt to bring the discourse into contempt," and wel hope equal honesty will be conceded to us in thinking the discourse -timed, and calculated under the circumstances to stir up strife, rather than conciliate affection, especially, as its delivery was accompanied with repeated challenges to controvert and ostensibly replete with defiant spirit. True, there was unanimously extended to him, by the brethren in the ministry, the courtesy of delivering a discourse upon the occasion, but none of them supposed that they had in that voluntarily subjected themselves and their congregations to pubiio and ceremonious ejectment from the visible church of Christ. Whether the very best that could have been done, was done, both in making the appointment and in its fulfillment, we do not undertake to say, but the exception taken to the discourse upon the ground of its being an effort to propagate do.nominational peculiarities, as matter of fact, is unquestionable; (it is not insisted that it was designedly so), for every one knows that the proposition, or notion, designed to be supported by the discourse, is a prom.

inate feature of denominational difference between his and other Protestant church; organizations. That we expected to have something to say (on Monday evening) upon the subject, (Unity of the Church) was announced, bat not a formal "reply" as understood Bro. Mac El Rey. This, rould not ha' been agreeable with the aunouncement commence a series of meetings which was made at the same time. That we relucti antly granted bin the privilege of remarks is true, as we were informed he had been prepating for a discussion upon the assertion that nothing caleulated to prepoke controvert be said.

it was dially granted and had the pledge been redeemed the results would have been dif: ferent. As to our accepting challenge publicly and privately given to discuss, have only to say, we do not think an oral diesussion upon that subject would be itable at present; not for laok of brains we have been informed he has insinuated? do we decline; for while ire are ready to acknowledge we have none to spare, yet we are aware there is often a difference quality as well as quantity in that article. We simply remark upon this feature of the case, that if there is a desire to. institute a comparison either as to mental cal? iber or the respective merits of denominational peculiarities, and he will consent to refer the matter to the public through the press, he can be accommodated. L.

C. WEBSTER. GREENVILLE, January 21, 1867. REV. J.

H. MAC EL Dear Sir: -We the undersigned, vestry of St. Paul's Church, Greenville, Ohio, hereby respectfully request, that inasmuch as the principies of your discourse, on the "Unity of the Church," preached by request of the clergy of Greenville, in the M. E. Church, on Sundny evening Janua: ry 13th, has elicited unsual interest and discussion in this community, you would more fully discuss them in a series of discourses, to which we would invite the public, with the privilege of asking any question, on any point presented.

Very Respectfully, N. BEEDLE. FRANK T. WARING. E.

DAWES. CHAS. G. MATCHETT. MESSRS.

BEEDLE, WARING, and others: -Gentlemen: I am. deeply grateful for your expression of desire to see discussed and vindicated the principles of the dis. course which has excited, all unexpectedly by me, so much criticism, abusive epithet, unmanly demeanor, of some off. cials of several churches, open insult of, discussion the principles of that course, so obnoxious to them and the Reverend man. Itcannot be possible that an daimportant discourse could have so stirred up the profounds of the preacher, and the leading members of several congregations.

That apology for silence will not satisfy the impartial, after so much vehemence of denunciation has been expended upon it. I doubt not but the people of this town will evince their zeal for the truth, by attending the fuller discassion of the prindiples of that sermon, and especially as it has been so falsely reported by malicious, and incompetent persons. I propose, therefore that if verbal discussion cannot be had, as is most desirable, as the topics are of the greatest ance, I will discuss it in a series of courses, in our own churah, to which we invite the public, with the privilege of asking questions on any point presented thority, may also that assure there the shall public, be no, on your a manly conduct, that no one shall be denied opportunity of questions or explanation, by being hissed, stamped down, played and sang down, or be in any way intimi dated, as was done in the M. E. Church.

It may be interesting, to the publio, to state, also, that in procese of the series, I shall have occasion to notice, various systems of. theology, church government, theories of the ministry, church history and practices, as I shall aim to. make the course instructive, and as much of the style of two sided discussion as can. I hope to continue the series each Sunday evening, till completed. The first will, be given the evening of Fobruary the 3d, 1867.
