New Owners Plan To Upgrade WRDU By JOHN POWELL Staff Writer The new owners of the Triangle area's NBC television affiliate, WRDUTV, have announced plans to improve television reception from the station in the Raleigh area. A Durham Life Broadcasting Co. official said Friday that his firm will build a new tower and transmitter on a 47- acre site off U.S. 1 near Apex in White Oak Township. Durham Life Broadcasting bought the site last summer, according to Carl V.

Venters president of the company. The final agreement between Triangle Telecasters and Durham Life Broadcasting Co. to purchase WRDUTV, channel 28, was signed Thursday, he said. Durham Life Broadcasting announced in late November that it would purchase the station from Triangle Telecasters. Venters said his firm has no detailed plans for the tower and transmitter, because engineering work remains to be done.

He said Durham Life Broadcasting would make a "substantial financial investment with a view of further improving WRDU's Channel 28's signal is weak in many sections of Raleigh and Wake County. Viewers in Chapel Hill and Durham receive a better television picture. Venters said, "What we are trying to do is to increase the power as much as we can." The station's present effective radiated power is about two million watts, he said. The maximum wattage permitted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is five million watts, Venters said. He again emphasized that the planned changes in Channel 28 depend on approval by the FCC.

"We hope to file an application with the FCC in Washington in about three weeks," said Venters. He estimated that a ruling by the FCC might take three or four months. Venters declined to disclose the sale price of the station because of a private agreement with the former owners, Triangle Telecasters. Once papers are filed with the FCC, the price will become public record. Earlier in the month, Venters said his company also plans to expand news, weather and sports programs.

The station will retain its NBC affiliation and its ultra-high frequency (UHF) status, Venters said. Durham Life Broadcasting, which operates WPTF and WQDR-FM radio stations here, had been negotiating for several months to purchase the station. Five Ancient Village Sites Found DURHAM (AP) Archeologists searching the Stagville. Plantation site near here have discovered five ancient Indian villages, one at least 10,000 years old. All of the villages are at least 5,000 years old and were found by Durham native Bill Autry, an archeologist at Vanderbilt University.

John B. Flowers III, administrator of the Stagville Center for Preservation Technology, said that while he understands the ancient villages are "not particularly unusual," the spot has a wealth of archeological artifacts. The plantation where the villages were found is the home of the preservation center, where research is conducted on methods of preserving historical buildings. A number of 18th and 19th century structures remain standing on the plantation. The tract was purchased by the Liggett Group in 1954 and was given to the state this year.

Flowers said archeologists from around the country will be able to examine the Indian artifacts. He said the site will eventually be opened to amateur archeologists. The center is one of four sites in the United States equipped to train people in preservation and restoration techniques. Stagville is the only one, however, which will also provide archeological instruction. The Indian villages are located along what is thought to have been an Indian fur trading path.

Injured Boy Cary High's Band Is Visited By 19 Santas Off to Rose Parade FAYETTEVILLE (AP) Six-year-old Phillip Davis got his wish to see Santa Claus this week, even though a broken leg prohibited him from going outdoors. The boy was injured last month when struck by a car while walking to his home in the Eastover community north of Fayetteville. The Fayetteville Observer ran a story about his plight in its Tuesday editions and 19 Santas responded by dropping in on the youngster. "His little eyes were just shining," said the boy's grandmother, Muriel Rouse. Last Thursday, an exhausted 79-year-old man stepped off a bus in Greensboro after a 20-hour ride from Indianapolis, to see the daughter he knew only through a similar photo.

The meeting ended 55 years of separation between the two. "It was a miracle," said Forrest Swinney of the reunion with his daughter. "It had to be. Both of us had given up hope." Separated from his wife in 1921, Swinney had never seen his then-unborn daughter until he stepped from the bus and walked toward an ecstatic stranger who looked amazingly like him. "God still performs those miracles," said Mrs.

Garrell as she sat with her father Thursday afternoon. "And don't say that he doesn't." Not only did Swinney find that he had a daughter. He also found he has a son-in-law, two grandaughters, two grandsons and 10 great-grandchildren. "To find out I've got a family like this," he said, "this is something else." Mrs. Garrell was born in 1921, shortly after her father and mother separated in Fries, Va.

Her mother, who died last year, took her maiden name and moved with her daughter from Fries. "We left Fries when I was just a baby," said Mrs. Garrell. "That's why he couldn't find me." Swinney and his daughter exchanged letters and snapshots in 1940 when she was 19 years old, but suddenly the letters began to come back marked "address unknown." Both had moved and contact was lost. She met an Army recruiter at a wedding several months ago, and found out that his last name was Swinney.

She told him the story about her father and the recruiter found out where her father was living through relatives in Indianapolis. "I wrote to find out if he was my father," she said. The letter made its way to a boarding house where Swinney was living. Then the owner of the boarding house called and put the two together on the telephone. "He told me when I spoke to him on the phone, 'I'm going to spend Christmas with you," Mrs.

6 Miles East of Raleigh, Hwy. 64, Ph. 266-2835 Christian Channel Planned A religious business organization has announed plans to operate a Christian-oriented television station on channel 22 in the Triangle area. L.L. Leathers of Durham, president of Carolina Christian Communications, said the group has asked the Federal Communications Commission for a license.

He said the application should take three to six months to process. "We're working on programming" while the application is being processed, Leathers said. "Although we are a Christian-oriented station, we plan to do entertainment and educational programming." If approved, the station would be the only television station in North Carolina devoted solely to religious programming. The organization currently has a program called "Good News for the Triangle" on channel 28 (WRDU) in Durham. Durham Life Broadcasting which has purchased channel 28, earlier expressed an interest in channel 22, but cancelled those plans when it bought channel 28.
