Pack Tests Tough PSU Despite the less than glittering records of the contestants, a crowd of over 40,000 will watch. Typical Lion Team Contrary to popular belief, Penn State has been beaten at home occasionally. They've lost two of their last 43 at Beaver Stadium. Continued from Page 11 This year's edition isn't much different from earlier Joe Paterno productionsmeaning that the defense is just about as rugged as you'll find and the kicking game is likely to beat you if the score is close.

State has been improving in recent games and so has Penn State. It would seem the Wolfpack might have an edge offensively, with freshman Ted Brown putting extra punch in the running game of late and Dave Buckey showing his best passing form. But the Lions have been decidedly stronger on defense. They've yielded only two touchdowns in the last five games. Beaten only by Ohio State in eight games, the Lions are being watched I by several bowl scouts.

A creditable showing here also would keep State in the bowl picture. East Carolina gets its third shot of the season against an ACC opponent and this one has special meaning because of Randle, who led the Pirates to two Southern Conference titles. Sonny's Cavaliers are limping with a 1-7 record and assorted injuries, but they have been very close to winning several games. ECU Coach Pat Dye has been pleased with the response of his squad to early disappointments against Appalachian and Richmond. The Pirates have won their last four, including an historic 38-17 thumping of North Carolina.

Virginia, meanwhile, has lost six in a row. Maryland will be seeking to solidify its bowl credentials in the game at Cincinnati. The Bearcats are no pushovers, though. They've beaten such teams as Memphis State and Houston. Joe Frazier Would Like Another Fight with Ali PHILADELPHIA (AP) Former heavyweight titleholder Joe Frazier, stopped in the 14th round of his title fight last month against Muhammad Ali, said Friday he would like another shot at the champion.

The first time they met four years ago, Frazier outpointed Ali in 15 rounds. Ali has beaten Frazier twice since then. (UPI) Dana Engelstad of Raeford, N.C., and Larry Mahan of Dallas, outscored their female rivals Friday during the sky diving and rodeo segments of the 12event Challenge of the Sexes. Engelstad won a narrow 375- 379 victory over Joan Williams the sky diving competition while Mahan captured the rodeo competition, whipping an ailing Shelia Bussey 293-209.

Miss Bussey was thrown on her second ride aboard a pound bull after three seconds. She had to stay on six seconds to score. She reinjured her left knee when her first bull bolted and bumped her leg against the pen before leaving the gate. She made a hurried dismount and was awarded a second attempt. N.

By JIMMY (the Greek) SNYDER LAS VEGAS If the Orange Bowl committee is looking for a solid Southern representative, it need look no further than its own state. The University of Florida is a national power. The Gators can hold their own with any team in the country except perhaps the top three- Ohio State, Oklahoma and Nebraska. One of the latter two is sure to wind up in Miami for the Orange Bowl, however. The loser of the Nebraska Oklahoma game figures to opt for the Cotton Bowl.

(Southern Cal, Penn State and the runner-up in the Big 10 and Southwest conferences also are being considered for the Orange Bowl, according to bowl committee members). 'Bama to Sugar Bowl? Alabama is all set for the Sugar Bowl. I've learned that Bear Bryant has committed himself to the Sugar Bowl Committee. And it doesn't look like Bryant will have to play Notre Dame again. Florida plays the Junkyard Dogs of Georgia on regional TV Saturday and no series has been closer over the last three years.

One point decided each of the last two and a field goal was the margin in 1972. Florida's wishbone quarterback Don Gaffney will be available, while Georgia held out quarterback Ray Goff last week to be set for the Gators. I make it Florida by 10. A team spokesman said Friday the Diplomats gave an undisclosed amount of cash to the New York Cosmos, for whom Kerr played four of the last five seasons. In 1973, he played for Club America of Mexico. Spiders Battle Bulldogs In Key Southern Clash The Associated Press Richmond's Spiders go after the Southern Conference football championship in their last year in the league at home today against The Citadel's Bulldogs, the only team left with any kind of a realistic chance to catch them. The Spiders, 44 overall, carry a 4-0 conference record into the encounter at Richmond City Stadium with one league encounter left.

The Bulldogs, 5- 3 against all opposition, have a 3-2 league record with two games remaining. Even should The Citadel win, the Bulldogs would have to capture their final league scrap with Furman's Paladins and Richmond would have to lose its finale Nov. 22 against William and Mary's winless Indians. The game is one of two on tap bit after being swamped by Penn two, though. Pitt is a Cavanaugh at quarterback, and like the runner he was as a and that's saying a lot.

The other has Virginia Military's 1974 conference champion Keydets, 2-5 over-all and 2-2 in the league, at home against William and Mary, 0-8 and 0-3. A victory would enhance the Keydets' chances of finishing in the runner-up spot, although they have a tough league closeout the night of Nov. 22 at East Carolina against the Pirates. The nonconference headliner has the Pirates, 6-3 over all and winners of four in a row, at Virginia to face the Caveliers, 1-7, of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia is coached by Sonny Randle, wht directed East Carolina to the league championship in 1972 and 1973 before leaving for the Cavalier job.
