Thursday, January 16,1975 'Godfather II': Another Triumph for Coppola Betty Heads Back to Broadway By Earl Wilson Publishers-Hall Syndicate NEW YORK Betty Hutton's heading back to Broadway at last. Job offers are being thrown at the one-time Blonde Bombshell of Hollywood but she isn't ready to work yet. A New York friend checked her out of a Providence, R.I., motel and brought her to his home here where she's being cared for by his wife and family. Betty's over the panic of loneliness that she suffered on leaving St. Anthony's rectory at Portsmouth, R.I., where she worked a year as a cook.

Now she wants to get some Florida sunshine and then resume her career if anybody wants her. evidently a lot of people do." she said in her hearty and cheery voice. The offers are mostly for night club appearances. "I think I'd like to do a Broadway show," said Betty. She added that she's learned "there are a lot of good guys around." It's unethical, but fun.

I sneaked a peek at "Shenandoah," the musical, at a preview. The minks at the preview weren't as expensive as those to be seen on opening night but they were paid for. There The memorable thing about Godfather" was not so much Marlon Brando's intense if overrated performance as a Mafia don, but the massive scale of Francis Ford Coppola's narrative. While most screen translations have reduced novels to celluloid novellas, the directorwriter's crime saga captured the epic sweep of the Mario Puzo book on which it was based. Superbly mixing elements of the studio and street films, Coppola brought good, old- By Bill Morrison fashioned storytelling back to the screen.

And now, with "Godfather 11," he has produced quite possibly the best weren't as many limos, nor as many investors making up: a claque. But Penelope Milford and Donna Theodore have a sure-fire hit song "'We Make a Beautiful Pair" and John Cullum was warm and wonderful. I recently wrote that it was a "sleeper" and a woman reader chastised me, thinking I meant it was something that put people to sleep. In Broadwayese, a sleeper is an unexpected smash, lady. Lisa Carroll, a leggy beauty with dimples and a bare midriff, brought a fresh, funny and sexy show into the Plaza Persian Room.

Lisa, a Bismarck, N.D., gal, did special lyrics for Cole Porter's "Let's Fall In Love," managing to say that Kissinger, Onassis and Wilbur Mills do it. Lisa was carrying several Plaza hotel room keys in her bodice which she took out to give to gents at the ringside. I tried mine and it led out to the street. On view at Valley One, "Godfather II" is really two films, preface and the epilogue to Vito Corleone saga. The Sithe cilian and early century New York periods are staged in masterful flashbacks, and these are interwoven with the contemporary story of Vito's son and successor, Michael (played by Al Pacino). Though each of the long the Commissioner," was formerly "the girl with the $100,000 smile" when she was a model. That was her annual income Francis Ford Coppola reportedly was offered the 20th Century-Fox presidency. It was an offer he could refuse.

ABC-TV's been requested by Louis Armstrong's s1 widow and the estate of agent Joe Glaser not to show a movie-of-theweek (due March 10) about Satchmo's early years; it stars Ben Vereen. The Armstrong sequences, past and present, end with something of a tantalizing cliffhanger, each is a well constructed unit that propels and the experience and sustains the viewer's commitment. Time in this case well over three hours is not of the essence. And one is surprised and even disappointed when it finally ends with Michael. alone, after his bloody victory.

And too, this intermingling of sequences draws parallels between past and present. The crime sagas of father and son estate had previously sold rights to his bio to Paramount Pictures, which'll have Flip Wilson in the title role. There are rough edges here. moments of confusion, some very sketchy characterization and awkward (particularly between Michael and his loving and then all-too-soon estranged wife). If this film is not classic screen literature as it might be defined by Bergman or a Fellini or a Renoir, it is strongly European in flavor and feeling. The visual mood is masterful. There are of course the graphic re-creations of time and place New York's "Little Italy" with its cluttered streets and dismal tenements.

And there's singular imagery as in the shot of the old steam engine seemingly floating on soot-filled air. The characters have been inspired by any number of historic crime figures, and it's senseless to make comparisons. The point of the film is that these figures of evil exist. They've created an industry, which, as one crime lord says with modesty, is bigger than U. S. Steel.

They've been helped on their way by governmental corruption, represented by Coppola's fictional senator from Nevada. G. D. Spradlin's performance as that sadistic hypocrite is typical of a fine disciplined ensemble. Pacino imbues the film with his quiet understatement illuminated by vivid emotional explosions.
