There are approximately 3,750 square miles of swamp lands in North Carolina besides thousands of acres of "overflow" lands, many of which are susceptible to reclamation, if properly drained.

In many instances, no difficulty has stood in the way of draining a particular piece of land, but absence, of adequate laws. There is no general drainage law in North Carolina, a' though several counties xnd townships have had laws passed relating to the drainage of areas within then-borders. Thus, it has happened quite frequently that a scheme for draining ceitain areas has had to be abandoned because, in order to carrp out successfully the plan of drainage, it would be tend the services this year, because of the usual spiritual enthusiasm manifest at Old St. Matkews meetings, and after waiting with great anticipation the oportunity of not only seeing the beautiful new brick -church in course of erection, but to assist in a liberal substantial way in its completion."
