swollen left wrist- stormed into a two-stroke lead in the third round of the Bahama Islands Open golf tournament Saturday while frustrated Arnold Palmer all but eliminated himself from title contention The 37-year-old Sanders had a third round 68 and posted a 54-bole total of 204 12 under pat on the 6660-yard Emerald Course at the King's Inn Golf Club Palmer the game's greatest gate attraction who was seeking to extend his record of having won at least once every year since 1959 stumbled in with a fat 75 and dropped back to 212 eight strokes off the pace Sanders a winner of 17 tour events but slump-ridden since he scored his last victory early in 1967 had a two-stroke lead over husky Chris Blocker Blocker a slow-talking Texan was the second-round leader and stayed in contention with a 71 for 206 Former Masters champion Gay Brewer had a 70 and was alone in third place at 209 Lee Trevino attempting to defend his spot as the No 1 money winner had a 67 and headed a group of four top-notch factory elite that dominate the races Those third place finishes had satisfied Boggs' ego for 1970 but third place finishes next season will not be enough "My equipment is new and compared to what I had last year it's the best" Boggs said "I can drive just as hard as the rest and I have confidence in my driving I believe I can win "If I don't win the only excuse I'll have is that I'm not capable that I can't win" The only problem remaining Is finding a sponsor a task that even the best of the super star line find difficult arid oftimes frustrating Boggs is not looking for a sugar daddy though He's not searching for a wealthy sportsman or a company that will finance his racing operation "All I want is a sponsor that will help me get off the ground" Boggs said "just somebody that wants to advertise on the side of my car" Boggs hopes his 1971 performance will more than repay a sponsor but he admits it appears the only sponsor he'll have may be the one in the driver's seat Sponsor or no sponsor however Boggs plans to run the complete circuit next season He'll run to win but he'll try to make every race and make a bid for the Grand American championship "I'm depending on racing to make a Boggs said "and the only way I'll be able to do that to make a decent living Is to make a showing that will impress the right 'opeople I'll have to be Cleveland of a chronic problem He took painkillers like aspirin but it was still so painful that he almost dropped to his knees after his tee shot on the first hole He bogeyed it The graying veteran started his move on the third hole with a two-putt birdie rolled in a 22-footer on the next and scored another two-putt bird on the sixth He matched a bogey five on the seventh with a tap-in bird after a beautiful five-iron shot on the ninth needed only a two-foot putt for a birdie on 11 and stretched his margin to two strokes with a 17-footer on the final hole The 41-year-old Palmer had a variety of troubles most of them with his putter He had a three-foot putt to save par on the eighth hole and missed by eight inches He dropped the club looked in agony at the sky and muttered "What a putting stroke that was" He really knocked himself out with a triple bogey seven on the 12th hole where he hit twice into the jungle growth that lines the fairways Aims High NASCAR able to win here (h) the GA division) and be able to make the transition to the big cars" He doesn't know when or if that will happen He enjoys racing in the GA division but should the opportunity present itself he wants to be able to make the jump and have the credentials to back up past performances "I learned a lot last year You can learn a lot in one year when you race against the best but I've still got room for a lot of learning" That's one reason Boggs is an advocate of the Flit sanctioning that opens several races every year to in-international drivers who usually cannot compete in the GA division "Those guys can really drive I've learned a lot from them The whole division (GA) has learned from them They help on the super speedways too I remember I was scared to death the first time I ran Daytona but I got some help and once I got the hang of it and found my confidence I enjoyed it Then when I went to Talladega I ran as hard as I could I love that track It's great fast and wide open" Boggs' best super speedway finish 10th was at Talladega the fastest of all super speedway tracks He did it in a second-rate car with second rate equipment and the help of his father End brother who make up the pit crew He won the rookie title with a car and equipment Buck Baker had thrown away and be competed the entire season with one engine He has come a long way but the hest may still be in the future Doug accomplished mud dauber racing a beat-up hobby class race car on the dirt and clay outlaw tracks in the Raleigh area For Boggs the big time was the Raleigh Fairgrounds' half-mile oval the only area track that ran under the NASCAR banner the recognized sanctioning body of racing in the South He has come a long way in a short time and admittedly still has a long way to go before the top of the racing ladder is in view Several months ago Boggs was named NASCAR's Grand American rookie of the year an honor bestowed on the best first-year driver in the pony car division that boasts the Mustangs Camaros Javelins and Firebirds such as the 1969 model Boggs raced last season The rookie honor added fuel to a competitive fire burning within Boggs He had grown up in a racing environment he had started driving as a youngster straddling a tube-metal frame Briggs and Stratton go-kart His father David Boggs Sr drove race cars and built them and David followed the seemingly destined footsteps Next season's effort will be as first-class as the 27-year-old rookie can afford Once again he'll compete in a Pontiac Firebird a 1971 Firebird new spit-polished and stuffed full of the best high
