Dyan Cannon (Alice) and Robert Culp (Bob) though, lies in the on-screen marriage of Cannon and Gould, a marriage. made possible marital by screen problems. Once as Barbra Streisand's husband, the young actor must of those comnot be as one acknowledged, es to rest, but rarely, in film comedy.

He SO utterly captures his character that he smiles, not because the script willed it, but because the person he plays would just naturally smile. And Dyan Cannon (the former Mrs. Cary Grant) shows a comedic understanding that's very much in the Lombard mold. You'll wait for her honey and lemon voice just as you once waited for Lombard's laugh. Minnelli Looms As Sex symbol when she opened smashingly at the Waldorf Empire Room showing a lot of pretty leg, bosom and posterior, with thigh-high and slit-skirt outfits.

She performed with a group, the Bojangles, and her godmother, Kay Thompson, sat ringside, shoulder-shaking and tabletapping with her. Otto Preminger, Dustin Hoffman, Jean Pierre Aumont, Robert Redford, Lou Rawls and such folk were there cheering her completely new extensively produced act which'll probably make her a of money in Los Vegas and in concerts. Meet Bob and Carol, two nicest people on the block, Ted and Alice, the funniest couple since Carole Lombard and William Powell lived at the movie theater down the street. The film that introduces this quartet and is named for them carries us past the Hollywood inhibitions, that marked Lombard the thirties. Bob andie Carol find emotional release at a truth clinic. Feelings not thoughts count. Sex if physical cannot "damage their personal love.

Carol's high on pot when she tells Ted and Alice about Bob's San Francisco affair. She beams with the honesty of this admission. And Alice (Dyan Cannon) looks at Ted (Elliott Gould) and says with the funniest deadpan since Keaton: "I have such hostility for Bob I think I'm going to throw up." the fRog and nightgown Jazz Dixieland 6 Nights A Week Tonight-Saturday World's No. Trumpeter DIZZY GILLESPIE and his NEW QUINTET 3 Shows Nitely, 10:00 11:30 Reduction With Dinner Plus Shows Extra Matinee Sat. 4 P.M.

State The slightly dizzy blonde's state (beyond her basic slightly dizzy blonde state) worsens even as director Paul Jazursky begins one of the funniest and most rhythmic comedy sequences. since Myrna Loy beloved "Thin Man." Nausea becomes an cedrin headache by the time the couple enters the bedroom. And since the film deals so honestly and provocatively with sex, we're exposed to a classic struggle.

Gould's libido pounds. Cannon's head throbs. The comedy peaks frequently and even as our laughter begins to subside, the director has started moving us toward even funnier moments. The wife succumbs and Gould bounces to her side of the bed. But wait.

Wait while she composes herself with all the enthusiasm of Dracula's bride. "Okay. Do. What. You.

Want." and Gould collapses, one tragic nerve. Cinematically, this is more than an attempt at a plain, entertaining movie like "Cactus Flower." All the elements have jelled even as we wait for the credits. The camera follows Bob and Carol on their drive to the clinic. The Hallelujah Chorus booms satirically on the soundtrack. The director cuts to the retreat itself and the naked worshippers.

The camera glides quietly beside the shadows of graceful dancers. A mood of tranquility. has already joined us to the film, like an act of love. And I would like to think that it had been created in her honor. When something is so very right about performance like Gould's embarrassed grin like Lombard's laugh then it cannot help but be funny in itself. Cannon's acting gurgles like brook, but her reaction! Watch for the Cheshire. grin in the psychiatrist's office. When you think she's held it long enough, it grows larger and becomes even funnier.

While the script favors the two supporting players, even the stars have effective moments. Robert Culp still has mannerisms learned at the Bill Cosby cool school (when they co-starred on TV's "I but the real actor evenutally breaks through. Just as you tire of Natalie Wood's giggles and dimpled smiles, the succumbs to the spontaneity that ignites the film. Bob and Carol may represent today's turned-on adults, but then they also represent the sorrow (or is it tragedy?) of giddy people trying SO hard to be individuals. Like sex appeal, individuality can't be affected.

Drifting without moral sails isn't freedom. New York critics may call the ending a cop-out, but I think it's brilliantly honest. The ideal and perfect ending for one of the most stylish and entertaining films I've seen in years. Symbol on three new restaurants in Palm Beach.
