Most of the songs are new, or unfamiliar at least, but there are few really good ones. The interminable "SadEyed Lady of the Lowlands" not only runs on too long but sounds better in Dylan's own version. Best for Miss Baez are "North Country Blues," "I Dreamed of St.

-Augustine," "Boots of Spanish Leather" and "Tears of Rage" (sung a capella). The many-sided Miss Baez has provided simple pencil sketches for the album cover. Sweet Charity (Decca) is the original soundtrack of the new musical film starring Shirley MacLaine, who handles most of the songs, and Sammy Davis who is confined to one.

Miss MacLaine's singing has a certain brightness and style, and she's abetted by John McMartin, Chita Rivera, Stubby Kaye and Paula Kelly. Shortly after the show's opening, some of the tarts perform a delightful version of "Big Spender," which is a topnotch tune. Nothing that comes after it even begins to approach this peak. Something on the order of modern American chamber music in a small jazz group context that's Country Roads and Other Places (RCA Victor), featuring the Gary Burton Quartet (Burton, vibes and piano; Jerry Hahn, guitar; Steve Swallow, bass; and electric bass guitar; and Roy Haynes, drums). Their often gentle, sometimes pulsating brand of jazz- country -European classicism includes eight of their own compositions, along with a Ravel Prelude Tombeau de Couperin: on which Gary overdubbed the piano track against his own four-mallet vibraharp work.

Ravel via Bix Beiderbecke, you might say. "True or False" is virtually a drum solo by Haynes. "Country Roads" and "'The Green Mountains" are excellent ballads, with blues lines and classical turns. The Queen's Guards (Lon don International) is (at this point the crier clears his throat) "a tattoo by the combined bands of the Life Guards and Royal Horse Guards (The Blues), with the Pipes and Drums of the Royal Highland Fusilers and the Juniors Guardsmen of the Household Brigade." We hear them in fanfares, medleys and a march, musical rides, and as mounted bands. And it's quite stirring, to say the least.

Werner Muller and his orchestra, with style and artistry, play music from old Vienna on a new London Phase 4 Stereo album. The program includes favorites from the works of Strauss, Lehar, Kreisler and other composers of the era. Shake Kean is to the flugelhorn in Europe what Al Hurt is to be trumpet in America. Dig It! his newest London Phase 4 Stereo album has him playing with the Ivor Raymonde Orchestra and Chrous. The tunes are of today "Honey." The performances are smooth (like velvet).

Also smooth (but with sentiment, and even sadness) is the alto sax of Ace Cannon. He's In the Spotlight on a new Hi recording, and the tunes played are all out of the contemporary bag My Fire." Big -Bold-Sevage GUNS OF "THE BRUTE THE BEAST" (M) Action in Color COMING: Tony Randell "HELL'O DOWN THERE" (G) Series Has 'Haunting' TV Story By Cynthia Lowry NEW YORK (AP) The cancellation of an offensive, tasteless television series can greeted with equanimity, even satisfaction.

ping of an inoffensive situation comedy series designed mainlv to amuse the early-evening "family audience" and which succumbed only to superior force evokes sympathyparticularly for the cast. Thus in mid-February when the principals of NBC's "'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" wound up their season's chores, they knew the future of the fantasy series was in the balance. The Lawrence competition Welk, a habit a from ABC's as strong as a Saturday night bath among many of the elder viewers, and CBS' nine year old "My Three Sons," routinely pushed it into third place in a three-network ratings race. Since a show that lasts but one season counts as something akin to a disaster, the apprehensive stars of the show brightened when NBC agreed to a cross-country personal appearance tour.

It looked as though there were still a chance of renewal. So Edward Mulhare, Hope Lange and Charles Nelson Reillypacked suitcases, and embarked on a grueling trip. Visiting cities carefully picked by research experts for their weight in the vital Nielsen audience sample on which the important trio ratings submitted are peg- to ged countless press, television and radio interviews, were short on sleep and missed regular meals. Then they reached New York, tired and slightly redeyed, just in time to receive the crushing blow. NBC's fall schedule had leaked prematurely and it held time spot for "The Ghost andMrs.

Muir." Unkindest cut all was that the news came before the network vice presi- with the 'ghostly' Edward Mulhare Hope Lange dent in charge of the care and coddling of performers could reach them to break the news gently. The next day, Mulhareunaware that a successful salvaging operation had already been started with ABC gallantly kept an interview date made earlier and indulged in a little hindsight quarterbacking. "I think perhaps if we had kept to the original premiseoh, it might have helped," he suggested, almost tentatively. "More with the original concept, less broad comedy. And, of course, it was an expensive show to make, with all the trick photography." The series, which was spun out of an old movie, has its foundation in fragile fantasy.

Its comedy works only if the viewer can be persuaded at Sunday TV Schedules WRAL-TV-Ch. 5, Raleigh 6:30 Big Picture 12:30 The Life 7:00 Christophers 1:00 Church 7:15 Industry 1:30 Circuit Rider 7:30 Gospel Jubilee 2:00 NBA Basketbal 8:30 Bible Stories 4:00 A.
