thoughts: This is a first for me more Wake County schools (three) among my top 10 for 4A than Charlotte-Mecklen- burg schools (two). Fu- quay-Varina replaces But- ler, which was stunned 10-7 by a now-3-4 East Mecklenburg team. My 3A ranks needed a big shake- up with teams like Ashe- ville and Lee County los- ing during the past week. Southern Durham and three others now are in. never seen a result that had a bigger ripple effect than 37-35 win against James Kenan.

Kenan was a un- animous No. 1 in 1A and Rosewood was perhaps in top 10. But the Eagles (5-2 with the losses coming to 2A and 3A teams) have earned the right to leapfrog the team everybody thought a week ago was largely unbeat- able. For me, that means moving Rosewood in to No. 4 and letting some western teams man spots 1-3.

Robbinsville (4-2) went from unranked to No. 2. Why? Because the defending champ knocked off Murphy, and its losses are to a private school and to an out-of-state school. 4A poll AP voters ballot 1. Mallard Creek 1.

1 James Kenan From staff reports ONLINE See photos of high school sports events and get the latest scores and stats at nando.com/preps not often you see a school compete against another 20 times larger, but that will be the case Friday when Word of God visits Ath- ens Drive in football. Athens Drive (0-7) is a 4A public school that opened in 1979 and has almost 2,000 students. Word of God (3-4) is a private school with less than 100 high school students in just its second year of 11-man football after becoming an 8-man powerhouse. Postcard from Green Hope HOF night: a big night at Green Hope Friday. The game will add to the two season- long rivalry nicknamed Fight for 55, named after the 2-mile stretch of N.C. 55 that separates the schools. 3-point stance best defenses: A Cardinal pass defense could not be improved upon last Thursday. Gibbons picked off only two passes and also intercept- ed the two-point conversion attempt to win 29-12.
