By DOMINGO RAMIREZ JR.

FORT WORTH The Better Business Bureau is warning that con artists are using the organization's name to steal from people who are led to believe that they have won a lottery. Bureau officials said one person lost $80,000 to con artists posing as BBB employees. The BBB does not run a lottery or award prizes to residents, John Riggins, the CEO of the BBB in Fort Worth, said in a news release late Wednesday. "Many people are struggling in the current economy, and when someone tells you that you've won millions in a lottery, it can seem like an answer to prayer," Riggins wrote. "Every year, tens of thousands of people contact BBB about a suspicious lottery and instead of cashing in, many lose thousands of dollars they don't have." Riggins said Thursday that the Fort Worth office has received about a half-dozen calls about lottery winnings and that all 120 BBB offices nationwide have reported such calls since January.

The complainants said they were contacted by telephone and e-mail by people claiming to be with the BBB and told that they had won a lottery. To claim the prize, the person was told to wire money back, officials said. In a few cases, the con artists used the names of real BBB employees, directing victims to legitimate profiles on the BBB's Web site, officials said. BBB officials gave these guidelines to avoid being a victim of the scam: Check the story out. Confirm the facts directly with the When Times Are EXPERIENCE COUNTS!
