I I I I I I 10 The News and Observer, Wednesdav, February 1, 1967 goings on Bill Morrison New TV Station Selects Classic Films for Debut Film masterworks ranging from the Oscar-winning of Fellini to Sophia Loren's "Two Women" will be among the premiere offerings by Raleigh's newest television station, WJHF. Channel 22, according to program manager Roland Jacobs, will go on the air in the 'fall with its primary programing emphasis the first season on quality films. But the UHF station also plans to provide as much network and syndicated entertainment as its prospective viewers want. And best of all, as much of the particular type the new audience requests. Thus, Jacobs today begins house-to-house and personal circulation of a detailed questionnaire that should produce a good cross-section of the actual viewing tastes existing in the Raleigh region.

Jacobs wants to know what viewers feel they are missing in the entertainment and educational areas and when would prefer to see specific shows.

Until the networks acknowledge the station and firm up their fall schedules with the establihsed stations, there will be no definite programming line-up to be announced. It is definite, though, that major films in prime time will be the distinctive feature the first year. Jacobs said the station's first purchase was from EmPictures Corporation, company, of Joe Levine, who for awhile was bringing the best foreign movies to this country. Sour With Sweet This package- like all film packages for television saleis so set up that a station or network must buy the sour with the sweet.

Often the average is one good film for three, five or seven mediocre motion pictures. The latter usually form early morning or afternoon programing for the kids. Perusing the Levine catalogue one sees a chronological study of the man's film career. He began exploiting Italian sand-and-sex adventures sex into the artistic foreign film market first buying completed films then financing his own--and now has more than $10 million tied up in the "Hollywood thing. WJHF will be dealing mostly with his expioitation and middie periods.

And, of course, Fellini's autobiographical masterpiece, and "Two Women" for which Loren won the best actress Oscar. Actually, Levine was responsible for more dreadful films than good, but the good are very good indeed and have been showered with honors. His best are experiences rarely found in the films genseen on the "movie nignts" in this country. Some of the films for television have minimum release dates and may not be seen here for two or three years.

But their purchase now bodes well for the eventual arrival of quality film programing on iocal television screens.
