Sunday Morning, October 13, 1963 Caps, Bla Blackbirds Head to Showdown GAMES FRIDAY NIGHT: Broughton at Jacksonville; Durham at Rocky Mount; Wilson at Fayetteville; Wilmington at Goldsboro. 99. HEADS DOWN PLAY STOPS BLUE DEVIL- Billy Futrell (25) is stopped on heads-down play by California tackler in second half. The Blue Devils were tied by the Bears, 22-22.

Catawba Tops Catamounts Broughton welcomed another score. They had seen how quick a 6-point lead could be erased when the Earthquakes dazzled them with their 68-yard march to tie the score just prior to halftime. Three big passes by Eddie Wyatt and Hal Davis and a run by Davis were all that was needed. The Quakes covered the distance in one minute and 29 seconds. Ironically, the three long passes, completed against the loose, five-man line Cap defense, were the Quakes' only completions of the night.

The Caps, with Mike Pedneau getting two, intercepted the same number. Broughton will be absent from conference competition for two weeks with games next week at Jacksonville and the following week at home against Reynolds. Cata. A homecoming crowd of 6,200 overflowed Memorial Stadium to witness a terrific defensive battle between the two Tar Heel elevens.

The teams battled scorelessly through the first half with neither penetrating. the other's 40-yard line. In the third period, however, the boom fell. WCC's Paul Sanders went back to punt and the ball sailed over his head on the snap from center. He chased it down, picked up and was tackled on the Western Carolina 13-yard line by a swarm of Indians.

Four plays later Catawba halfback David Campbell dove into the end zone for the game's only touchdown. Bill McDevitt missed the kick for extra point. The Catamount's deepest penetration of Catawba territory was to the 38-yard line in the fourth quarter. Catawba did not dent WCC's 40-except for the scoring play until late in the fourth when two consecutive 15-yard penalties against the Catamounts put the ball on the WCC 11. Time ran out before Catawba could get off a play.

The Catamounts played the game without the services of four key performers, all of whom are suffering from knee injuries all-conference tackle Frank Stankunas, defensive halfback Dick Kuszyk, end Jack Sams and guard Bobby Johnson. (AP)West Virginia found a lightning thrust in the passes and runs of Jerry Yost and came from behind Saturday for a 20-16 Southern Conference football victory over a William and Mary team that was its own worst enemy. Yost passed for two of the Mountaineer touchdowns and scored the third while leading West Virginia to its first conference victory of the season.

A crowd of 84,712, biggest in Buckeye history, sat quietly in the last two seconds a's the senior from Ligonier, missed an almost impossible one from 57 yards.

That would have pulled the game out for Ohio State. Van Raaphorst's boot, which eclipsed his 48-yarder against Indiana last week, provided a fitting climax to as wild a game as these teams have played since before the turn of the century. Only one of the five touchdowns came on a drive of any length. Each team converted a close-in gamble and intercepted pass for a pair of scores. Betsy Rawls of Spartanburg, S.C., the leader at midpoint, blew to a 76 and a second-place tie at 223 with Kathy Cornelius of Scottsdale, who shot a 75. Miss Rawls, near a tie for the lead on the 18th green, missed a 40-foot putt by inches. She also fluffed a return putt and took a bogey.

The Caps cleared a big hurdle with the victory over Goldsboro by deceiving da score of 26-6. This win, coupled with Rocky Mount's 42-0 rout of Wilson and Fayetteville's 20-13 squeeker over Durham left the conference race unchanged. Broughton and Rocky Mount lead with 4-0 records. Fayetteville, a victim of Rocky Mount a week ago, is in third place with a 2-1 record.

The old familiar Broughton Rocky MountFayetteville race to the wire is more apparent than ever. (AP)Harvard found a devastating offensive punch in quarterback Mike Bassett and sophomore halfback Wally Grant Saturday and he Crimson shattered Cornell 21-14 in the Ivy League football opener fo, both teams. Grant, a 19-year-old, 185-pounder from Beverly, rammed over from the 15 early in the second quarter to tie the score and Harvard took the cue from there. Bassett's passes kept the Cornell defense loose and minues later halfback Tom Bilodeau smacked over from the one and it was Harvard's ball game after that.

(A Pat Screen, Louisiana State's star sophomore quarterback, suftered a broken clavicle in his right shoulder in the football game with Miami Friday night and probably will be lost for the season. The team's trainer said the LSU physician told him Screen would be out for eight weeks, "which means the rest of the season." More X-rays were being taken of the injury which forced Screen to leave the game in the quarter. LSU won 3-0. a 20-7 triumph over Jacksonville. An assertion that the 26-6 score of the Broughton-Goldsboro game doesn't reflect the closeness of the contest could be refuted by the one-sided statistics of the game.

The fact remains, however, that the two clubs locked at 6-6 with about five minutes left to play. The Caps, who probably would have settied for a 7-6 lead at that time, exploded for three touchdowns. Where the score had been 6-6 with 5:04 to play-just prior to the first of the three lightening touchdowns with 3:24 left it was 26-6. Broughton moved the ball well between the 20-yard lines. "But we couldn't punch it Cap Coach Clyde Walker lamented.

Now can the Los Angeles Lakers end the domination of the Boston Celtics in professional basketball? That is the question as the Nation Basketball Association opens its 18th season on Wednesday with a new president in J. Walter Kennedy, two famed rookies in Art Heyman and Jerry Lucas, two new teams in Baltimore and Philadelphia and several new coaches.

Wilt (The Stilt) Chamberlain and Bill Russell, who have set records galore, will be back with the San Francisco Warriors and Boston Celtics, respectively, but there will be one big absentee. Bob Cousy, a crowd pleaser for years with his spectacular passing, dribbling and shooting, has retired from the Celtics and became a college coach. In their drive for a sixth straight NBA championship the Celts will go for victory No. 1 at Baltimore in one of Wednesday's three opening games. The new Philadelphia 76ers are at Detroit and the Cincinati Royals, with Lucas making his pro debut, are at St.

Louis in the other two openers. On Thursday the Celtics are at Cincinati and Baltimore is at New York, where Heyman, last season's top college player, will make his pro debut with the Knicks. The Celtics will sit out Saturday while all the other clubs, in the nine-team league go at it. New York will Cincinnati, Detroit at Philadelphia, San Francisco at Baltimore and Los Angeles at St. Louis.

Although the Lakers led by Elgin Baylor and Jery West, again are expected to reach the playoff, which they lost to Boston the last two years, Red Auerbach, the Boston coach, thinks Cincinati is the team to watch. "Any body is crazy who doesn't bet on Cincinnati," is the way the fiery Celtic coach puts it. "The Royals took us the full seven games in the Eastern Division playoffs. Now they have all that talent back, plus Jerry However, Red added: "We're still the champs until somebody proves otherwise. Barring injuries, it will be our own fault if we don't win again." A quick rundown on the other clubs: New York Success of the Knicks depends largely on how rookies Heyman and Jerry Harkness adjust to the pro style.

Detroit Under new coach Charley Wolf, the Pistons may again beat out San Francisco to reach the playoffs. Bailey Howell is the sparkplug. Baltimore The old Chicago Zephyrs, the Bullets are expected to improve along with Walt Bellamy and Tery Dischinger. Rookie Red Thorn may San Francisco New coach, Alex Hannum, has Chamberlain moving more in effort to move Warriors into playoffs. Philadelphia--The old Syracuse Nationals, now the 76ers, with veteran Dolph Schayes as coach.

With Hal Greer, Lee Shaffer and Johnny Kerr, along with Len Chappell, they figure to contend for Eastern honors. St. Louis -Coach Harry tin expects the Hawks to be much stronger with great improvement expected from Zelmo Beaty. Bob Pettit, Clif Hagan Len Wilkins standouts. It all adds up to a 360-game grind with each team playing 80 games before the playoffs start.
