24 The News and Observer, Thursday, June 18, 1964 Marian's Still Chasing Bachelors By JOSEPH FINNIGAN. HOLLYWOOD (UPI)Marian Collier has put on her running shoes, looking forward to another television season of chasing one of video's most eligible bachelors. Miss Collier, a pretty girl who would make a fine catch, is a member of that hearty breed of television ladies never make it to the altar. reminiscent women in They're actressing who are horse operas who played second fiddle to the cowboy's nag. Miss Collier plays a school teacher on Novak." For the past year, she's been chasing Jim Franciscus, who plays the title role of a teacher.

No Success The young lady's luck hasn't been too good. The could do was to corner Franciscus for a an occasional date, usually to attend some school function. "Nothing has really developed," said Marian of her make-believe chase. "I think he's got other things on his mind." A hit and miss romance such as the Collier-Franciscus situation might bore some girls. To Miss Collier it's a change of pace from bad to good.

"This is the first time I've had a chance to play a nice girl," she explained. "I've always played other woman or something ridiculous." And she also has to think of her future on the show. It would be the end of my career." Instead of teaching home economics in "Novak's" school, Marian would be out of the show. As a matter of fact, that's an old television trick of getting rid of an actress in a regular series. It works wonders when some production expert decides to cut actors off the payroll. If anybody seriously suggests that Marian and Franciscus get married in the show, she should take the hint and look for another job. Actor Put on Probation SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Actor Sterlin Hayden was given a $220 fine and a year's probation Tuesday for his part in the civil rights demonstrations at automobile showrooms last March.

Hayden accompanied his plea with a letter to Chief Probation Officer John D. Kavanaugh in which he indicated a distate for jails: "I dislike crowds. I dislike group action and there is no Writers' Meet Set RIDGECREST-Writers'.

The NBC program is a study! of a "typical" small American community and its on national elections. Salem, N.J. is the subject of the documantary, and after a tour of the town main street, clubs, churches and businesses, the viewer gets the citizens' opinions on everything from entertainment to foreign aid. Special segments are devoted to two main issues: civil rights and teen-age conduct.

Then Brinkley views the consenses and offers his prediction of the election outcome. According to NBC and the U. S. Bureau of Census, Salem is a town of 9,000 persons situated on the southeastern shore of New Jersey. Anchored with a history dating back to Colonial times, the community is experiencing the same economic and social pressures that affect its kindred communities across the nation, pressures that are translated into political terms in times of national elections.

Brinkley presents questions to MOVIES Downtown CARPETBAGGERSGeorge Peppard, Carroll Baker, Alan Ladd. The Green Sheet: "Harold Robbins' long, sensational novel has been fashioned into a long, sensational film. Dissolute young Jonas Cord takes a firm grip on the family business at his father's sudden death, and develops an industrial empire in 20's that includes plastics, airplanes and motion pictures. In his tricky business operations and his private life, easy women, ambitious, double-dealing men, friends and foes are all devoured by young Cord. When he is forsaken, one by one, by those he has used and abused, a pseudo-psychological explanation is given for his obsessive greed for power, his corruption of others and his own deterioration.

On its shiny surface, the picture reproduces the fabulous era of the 20's and 30's and the youth of both the aviation and the motion picture industries. A practically all-star cast makes much of tasteless, risque situations and dialogues." Variety: "Joseph E. Levine's screen version of "The Carpetbaggers" is lusty, vulgar and gusty and, on one notable occasion, painfully brutal. It projects with harsh, driving force -often erratically-the same two basic elements that propelled the novel into the bestseller lists. One is the underlying connection of its principal characters to several real and glamorous people around whom there has always circulated a certain aura of mystery.

The other is a notorious reputation-a hint of sexual wickedness. Add to these alluring features an array of fairly salable marquee names and a physical production of considerable opulence. That's the sunny side of the picture, but there's a negative side too. For despite its gaudy and glamorous sugarcoating, the Carpetbaggers is hardly to be recommended for youngsters and there will be adults who find this a rather distasteful melodrama that wears awfully thin long before its kingsized running time of 150 minutes is expended."
