000 000 00 000 000 000 0 000 Bucks, Spartans To Launch Play In Top Contests By ROBERT MOORE Associated Press Sports Writer The last two nationally -ranked college teams, Ohio State and Michigan State, say hello to the 1962 football season Saturday but several unranked clubs are slated to hog most of the spotlight on this second big Saturday of the young campaign. Ohio State, No. 2, is host to North Carolina, and Michigan State, No. 6, journeys to the West Coast to battle Stanford. Neither of the Big Ten 1 conference powers is expected to have too much difficulty.

The Buckeyes will catch the Tar Heels hoping to rebound from spanking by North Carolina State. Stanford squeezed past Tulane 6-3 in its debut will be out to avenge a 31-3 licking the Spartans administered the Indians year ago. Perhaps the day's headliner is the nationally-televised (CBS, 3:30 p.m., EST) scrap between Notre Dame and Oklahoma, two ambitious teams anxious to regain some of the gridiron prestige they've lost last two or three years. A sellout crowd of 61,718 will storm Norman, to witness this fifth meeting between the Sooners and the Trish, who both carved 5-5 records in 1961. Oklabegan its year last week homa, edging Syracuse 7-3, gaining the decision on third-string fullback Joe Don Looney's 60-yard romp with two minutes left.

It is an account of the strange trip home made by Floyd Patterson after he lost the heavyweight title to Sonny Liston.

The author is close friend of the former champion and collaborated with Patterson on the fighter's life story "Victory over By MILTON GROSS. Sports Columnist, The New York Post. Floyd Patterson told me clusively today how he drove a lonely road from Chicago to New York disguised in a beard and mustache, and decided along the way that he wants to fight Sonny Liston again in February or June. While his family, friends, and the world were looking for him, Floyd was driving through the night alone except for a moment somewhere in Ohio where he was stopped by a policeman and nearly got arrested. Floyd told me he bought the mustache and beard on the day of the fight and before he entered the ring.

"Not that I expected to lose. I didn't expect to use it. I left it at the hotel when I went to the ball park, but after the fight 1 had someone else rush back and get it for He told me of driving along the Ohio highway before dawn on Wednesday, of parking off the road to stretch his legs. A State trooper's prowl pulled up time a the trooper reached the of Patterson's car, Floyd had managed to put on the beard only part way. It hung from his chin as the policeman shined a flashlight into the car.

"What are you doing here?" the trooper asked. "I just stopped to stretch my legs," Patterson said. "I'm driving from Chicago to New York." "Let me see your license." Floyd produced the for car he had borrowed from a relative. He had not wanted to use his Lincoln Continental, with its FP license plates. He was seeking anonymity.

did not have his driving license, however. That had been left in you don't have a license, I have got to take you the trooper said. Floyd reached up and took off the beard. Then he took off the mustache. "Are you some kind of an actor?" the cop asked.

Patterson took off his cap. The trooper shined the light full in his face again. "Aren't you. "Yes," said the former heavy. weight champion.

"I lost a fight last night. Do I have to lose again? Wouldn't it be all right if I mail you my license when I get home? I just forgot it." "You won't have to do that," said the trooper. "You won't have to lose again. You'll get him the next driving to the Selma 3 as the game ended and to the 9 in the first period. Selma never got closer than the Garner 25.

Howard as the best halfback in the conference. Jimmy Howard, son of the coach, was promoted back to the No. 1 fullback ahead of sophomore Pat Crain. The changes do not mean a great deal because two teams will see equal duty, and often the Clemson second unit does better than the first. The Tigers have an outstanding group of ends, and coverthe passing of Anderson and Parker offers a major defensive problem.

Of more concern, though, is moving the ball against the Tigers. They are big and rugged not quite as large as some recent productions but perhaps a little quicker. Tackles Don Chuy (260) and Dave Hynes (235) are some of the experienced huskies up front. The Clemson defense held State to six first last season. It gave up only 71 yards rushing and 40 passing.

In its two chances, Clemson shut out teams quarterbacked by Roman Gabriel. Now it runs into a different style Wolfpack attack will have Jim Rossi, a good runner, at the controls. A feature the game will be the punting of Eddie Werntz of Clemson and Dave Houtz of State. They are regarded as tops in the conference, and among the Howard says Werntz is the best he ever saw.

(AP) Mickey Wright of San Diego fattened her lead to four strokes Friday at the halfway mark of the 72-hole Mickey Wright Invitational Golf Tournament. "From what I can make of it," Floyd said, "I got hit bobbing under a punch. I didn't know it at all. I thought I was bobbing and weaving under, but he carne across and I managed to get hit with it. He can definitely hit. That's one thing I can say for him.

"I saw everything he threw up to that point," Floyd said, "and that surprised me. His body shots in clinches, for instance. They didn't hurt at all and I was so amazed that they weren't bothering Liston had said that a right hand to the body was the source of Patterson's downfall. "He stopped coming forward when I hit him one, and one of his legs go up and I know I got him," Sonny explained in the fight post-mor tem. "I paused," Patterson conceded, "and that a mistake.

But I paused because I was so surprised that his body punches were landing and not hurting. The medicine ball in my belly in the gym hurt more. My mind went to that, I was so amazed. "You know," said Floyd, "in a clinch, I went to put my arms on him and I said to myself, 'I'm bigger than and I always thought he looked big to me. I always thought of him as a big man." According to some observers, Floyd looked intimidated in the ring.

The result may be the same, but I'm convinced I can do better. I know it, I will do better. I don't think we'll have. to wait long to find out either." The return bout gives Patterson the right to name the date, site and promoter. It ties Liston to him as an opponent for most of his purse and a million dollar penalty.

Even as the new champion, Sonny, who got per cent of Tuesday night's draw, gets only 30 per cent the next time. He's not pleased, but it's a civil contract he accepted to get his shot. Patterson said, "The fight will be in Florida in February or June in New York. "But I don't know whether he can get a license in New York or not. What do you think? And as he recounted the reason for his sad and desolate departure from Comiskey Park, Floyd said: "That State trooper squeezed my shoulder and talked to me like a friend. What he said made think he felt almost the same way I feel. I know I'll do better the next time." When his wife, Sandra, came into the dressing room after his defeat, Floyd told her he would pick her up at the Bismarck Hotel and together they would drive back home that night.

However, Floyd underwent a change of heart later. He called her again from an outside phone booth. "I told her I wanted to drive nome alone and she under. stood. I told her to take a plane the next day.

I assured her I was all right. I do better when I'm able to think and analyze things all by myself." Analysis was not easy at first. "I had the radio on in the car, Floyd said, "and on every station all I could hear was that Liston was the new champ. Every time I turned the dial that's all I heard. I'll have one advantage once I get in there against Liston again and he'll have all the other advantages I'll know what I'm up against, even though the public will not have the same feelings the night of the fight." After remaining in seclusion at his camp most of yesterday, Floyd got into his car and drove home to his wiie and four children who were waiting for him. They had more rough work than is usual after a season starts and they even scrimmaged on Monday. The coaches felt it was a fruitful week. Ohio State will field a team containing nine starters from last year' unbeaten powerhouse. This unit will be used as the offensive team in Coach Woody Hayes' two-platoon system. The defensive starting team will have seven sophomores on it after the promotion of two more sophs.
