10 00.0 0 Pirates, Apps Play Key Game HICKORY -Two of the top contenders for the Carolinas Confer. ence championship collide tonight when East Carolina and Appalachian meet at this neutral site. Both teams bring 5-1 records into the game but East Carolina's Pirates lead in the conference with a 4-1 mark. Appalachian is 3-1. Coach Jack Boone of East Carolina, calling the contest his team's most crucial to date, says the team has improved with each game.

"Our blocking has been sharper and the defense kept down the long gainers," he remarked. Pulled One Out. The Pirates won a big, one last week by a 13-7 count at Newberry to the alert play of end Richard Honeycutt. With Newberry leading 7-6 in the last minute, Honeycutt stole the ball from the Indians' Phil Orsini at the Newberry ten line. Two plays later he caught touchdown pass from Dan Rouse for the winning points.

That win came after the lone East Carolina setback, a 7-6 loss to Western Carolina. Early wins came over (Pa.) State Teachers, Guilford, Catawba, and Elon. He was the United States distance star of the roaring: 20's. He matched a world 4:12 in bas-1925, competed in three Olympics, carried the Illinois Athletic Club colors into 950 races and won medals, ribbons or trophies in all but one. For the last six years, he has been running a birthday mile on April 13. His best was 5:50 in 1959. He was disappointed with his 6:2.6 special mile Friday.
