WTVD Will Become CBS Affiliate 11 LI AWL Durham's television station, WTVD, has become an affiliate of the Columbia Broadcasting System and plans to begin full-time CBS programming in about six months, it was announced in Durham yesterday.

Officials of the Channel 11 VHF station reported a contract with the national network was signed in the executive offices of CBS in New York City. WTVD lost its network affiliation, with NBC, last December to Raleigh's WRAL-TV. Since then, WTVD delegations have conferred with both CBS and NBC in effort to win full network status. Since WRAL-TV went on the air, the Durham station has been rying numerous ABC network programs and a small number of CBS programs. It is expected that the new contract will result in fulltime CBS programming on or about April 1, 1958.

Although the officials of Raleigh's UHF station, WNA0 TV, have made no formal announcement of their plans, it is expected that the Channel 28 outlet will give up its CBS affiliation and become a full-time ABC network affiliate early next year. The CBS move was termed by WTVD officials as "a major step forward in the rapidly growing television industry." Participating in the signing ceremonies were William Lodge, group vice-president for the Columbia Broadcasting System, and Ed Shurick, vice president in charge of CBS Station Relations. Representing WTVD were Frank Smith, president, and Harmon L. Duncan, vice president ham Broadcasting Enterprises, Inc. "WTVD was chosen as an affiliate by CBS after a careful review of the television facilities in the area," announcement said.

"'The new contract will mean an expansion of service and selectivity by WTVD to the capital city area of Durham, Raleigh and vicinity. She spoke at a luncheon after officials of the Piccadilly and St. James Assn.
