EEK & MEEK by Howie Schneider HOUJ PID v r<X) FIAJD A CIUE- LEGGED FROC, * 6-/3 .M QUESTION: Can YOU tell me something about ostriches? * * * ANSWhR: Ostriches arc the largest of all living birds. A mature bird is about X feet tall and weighs more than 300 pounds. Ostrich eggs may weigh as much as 3 pounds, equal to the weight of 2 or 3 do/en hen's eggs. Baby ostriches are about the si/e of a chicken. In the wilds of central Africa, bands of ostriches travel across the desert in the company of zebras and antelopes. They are clumsy looking birds, but are very active and can run as fast as 30 miles per hour. Ostriches have a large appetite in keeping with their size and activity. In the wild, they live on grass, leaves, seeds and fruit. They also eat birds and insects. They • drink water when it is available, but can survive without water for a long time, a quality which enables them to live in an arid environment. They devour hard materials, such as stones, glass and bones. This gritty material assists digestion. In captivity, they are usually fed alfalfa and grain. For many years ostriches were raised on farms for their feathers or plumes. When the demand for plumes diminished due to changes in fashion, ostrich farms quickly became unprofitable because the birds require such large quantities of food. 6-13 (Scott Littv of Poland, Ohio, wins a prize for this question.
