Gets Easy $10000 Pack Invades Wake Forest State Meets Deacons in 41st By Dick Iterbeet With All Foes Scared Off Calumet Star Wins Special in Walkover If Renewal of Traditional Grid Battle By BOB BROOKS Wake Forest Oct Forest and State two of the nation's most enthusiastic football feudists will come to grips again here tomorrow at 2:30 for their annual Wake County championship battle I an ancient and traditional- gridiron struggle which dates back to 19071 No little brown jugs or old oaken buckets go to the winner of this one but they play for keeps as is attested by the close margins by which victory has been achieved in most of the 40 preceeding contests Stray thoughts about today's football: There's a strong Tennessee flavor about the day's program Carolina's undefeated Tar Heels will be in Knoxville to meet General Bob Neyland's Vols always a tough assignment against the coach who put Tennessee on the football map Duke's undefeated Blue Devils tackle Georgia Tech which is coached by one of Neyland's star players Bobby Dodd Another Tennessee great under Neyland is Beattie reathers who sends his Wolfpack against Wake Forest today Great players do not always make good coaches but the All-Americas Neyland turns out in Knoxville generally turn to coaching and with marked success Herman Hickman who played with Feathers is the new Yale coach and already is being acclaimed as the greatest in Yale's illustrious football history 1- 1 ifr 4 4---r7r''--- i 4: 4: --Nk: vs AyAi: a kz: 0 1i'J: -F77i------ 4g 'V 1 :7 -W 5'-A i le! 1 0 '-k i'''- ii4 4- ili'l rt 4 i A The Calumet farm great won it on his reputation Jockey Eddie Arcaro brought the sleek chestnut colt out before an estimated 15000 fans and gave him a solo run around a mile and three-sixteenths It took him I minute 598 seconds The track record is 1:564 Citation thus became the second Calumet horse to scare off all (Toosition to the invitation affair Whirl-away made it a walkover in 1942 Owner Special winner kept Citation at a steady fairly fast pace after getting the flag at the head of the stretch The time was only 14 seconds slower than Calumets Fervent won last year's Special The crowd gave the Triple Crown winner a hand as he paraded to the post and a warm ovation as he crossed the finish None of the Special flourishes Vas omitted although it was made an extra race on te card to permit the usual eight betting etents The red-coated Pimlica band in the infield blaring away and awaiting Citation at the finish was a blanket of chrysanthemums At the Calumet stable there was champagne for the winning outfit nfl ay et--t ico on an im is nd of on lal a IL ng he he he fig 3m te uor The Sir Walter Hotel had illustrious grid guests for breakfast yesterday morning as the unbeaten untied Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets arrived to make their headquarters here prior to today's inter-conference clash with Dukes Blue Devils at Durham Coach Bobby Dodd (center) talks pre-game strategy over coffee with two of his ace Brown (left) and Jimmy Southard The Blue Devils and Yellow Jackets meet for the 16th time in their football series at 2 o'clock in Duke Stadium State's Wolfpack -holds the upper handin the series with 24 victorieS as against 13 for the Deacons of Wake Forest Three games have ended in tie scores Likewise the Pack has dominated more recent history of this neighborly feud having upended the Baptists for the past two seasons when the gridders of Deacon Dell were favored by varying margins State won here in 1946 14-6 and shut out last year's big Deacs 20-0 in Raleigh Homecoming Game Coach Peahead Walker's current Wake Forest charges hope to put an end to the two-year State jinx here tomorrow before a Homecoming crowd which is expected to exceed 20000 Their chances of accomplishing this are only 50-50 in the eyes of the oddsmakers who have marked the game as a toss-up in most quarters while the more liberal sporting gentry have conceded the Deacons a one-point edge The Wolfpack coached by Beattie Feathers the former Tennessee and pro football great will bring a season's record of two victories two defeats and a tie into tomorrow's fracas Wake Forest has won three times and lost twice Their only mutual opponent thus far has been Carolina to which both Forest by 28-7 and State by 14-0 The Deacons well-rested and in physical good trim as the result of an open date last week have worked studiously on the practice field for two weeks in an effort to prime their newly adopted T-formation for its best effort of the Duke could do a lot to further cement Carolina's bid for the unofficial Southern championship Georgia Tech is the only other school in the South with a perfect record and regards Duke as one of its most difficult obstacles It was against Tech a year ago that Fred Folger suffered an ankle injury and a broken nose The weak ankle has been a handicap to him ever since and spoiled his chances of taking a place with the greatest Duke backs of all times Even so he will rate very highly in Duke's football history Beattie Feathers was the first to introduce the T-formation to the Big Four and Wallace Wade of Duke and Peahead Walker of Wake Forest were expected to be the last ones to desert the single wing Beattie has given up on the for a few Walker has installed that style of attack and probably will maintain it for at least three more years The last time Carolina made a plane trip for a football game it was swamped by Texas 34-0 Yesterday the Tar Heels went to Knoxville by air in quest of their thirteenth straight victory Coach Carl Snavely believes in good luck charms but apparently he isn't superstitious about airplanes Another Big Card Next Week The capacity of Duke Stadium this year is about 43000 because only a few temporary bleachers have been erected The largest crowd ever to see a game anywhere in the the 56000 which attended the transplanted Rose Bowl game on January 1 1942 The riseof Carolina to the front of the Big Four has had its influence on Duke's football receipts There's a lot of interest in today's schedule but there's another big one coming up
