THE HERALD 22A WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 3 2004 TELEVISION US CONGRESS Senate remains Coverage of caution a display restraint CRITIC GLENN GARVIN ggarvm com toral votes really meant little: only things that have been called here tonight are the slam dunks no further along than we were three hours But if you actually opened your eyes and looked at your television screen it was another story altogether The birdbrain over-exuberance that dominated coverage four years ago was channeled this time into horrifying but ultimately harmless excess in sets and graphics The most grotesque example was backdrop at Rockefeller Plaza which the network pretentiously renamed Democracy Plaza for the night There were more US flags flapping in the wind than the day the US Army marched into Paris and the ice-skating rink was turned into an enormous red-stateblue-state electoral map The garish overkill was disconcerting background for an evening that may have been our election-night farewell to an entire generation of anchormen Tom Brokaw will retire by the end of the year and Dan Rather (best Ratherism of the evening: the presidential race in Florida was than a Times Square and Peter Jennings will be well into their 70s by 2008 In the razor-edge drama of Tuesday returns the anchors were largely a forgotten story except when Arizona Sen John McCain capped an interview with Brokaw by saying: behalf of myself and my wife and the millions who have watched you thanks for the And for a blink of an eye Brokaw looked like he might do what anchors never do: shed a tear it In a splendid example of democratic compromise Tuesday TV election coverage offered us both humbly serious journalism and gloriously idiotic excess even if it give us what we really wanted: a clear winner Still nursing wounds from the ping-ponging projections of 2000 the major networks were cautious and sensible in picking winners and explaining their choices going to err on the side of promised Wolf Blitzer why as midnight approached no network was willing to declare a victor in decisive battleground states Florida or Ohio even though President Bush had held a tenuous lead in both for hours (ABC finally broke the Florida deadlock at 11:38 pm calling Bush the winner) Less cautious was Spanish-language network Telemundo which proclaimed Bush the winner in Georgia before polls even closed there Nonetheless Telemundo outshone rival Univision which stuck to its telenovela schedule If you just listened to the election coverage and commentary it was sober and intelligent: Brit Hume explained how the strategy in keeping Ralph Nader off the ballot in several states yielded little support for Sen John Kerry polling data showed the frustrated Nader voters were so furious they either stayed home or cast spiteful ballots for Bush George Will noted that civics teachers should be careful what they wish for high turnouts usually reflect a badly divided electorate Bob Schieffer at 10 pm pointed out that a seemingly impressive Bush lead in elec TV fa herald candidate Barack Obama exits the polling booth with on Tuesday Obama will be the only black senator Republicans held onto most of the seats they had and gained some previously Democratic seats to retain control of the Senate By DAVID ESPO Associated Press WASHINGTON Republicans renewed their grip on the Senate Tuesday night and reached out for more capturing a string of Democratic seats across the South Democratic leader Tom Daschle faced a strong challenge in South Dakota Democratic State Sen Barack Obama a political star in the state legislator In Louisiana Republican Rep David Vitter led several Democratic rivals comfortably with more than 90 percent of the precincts counted and flirted with an outright majority that would
