Although the big sleeve is decried much, it has brought us much to be thankful for. But- for it capes would not have been brought to so irreat a per fection.

Their beauties would have been undiscovered, since in that case coats would bold sway overall. Capes should be all a-arlitter with beads or lined with fur. They should be soft and dainty, to add a bewitching look to any lady as she hides herself within the carriage. isn-net does not seem the proper material, and yet it is the foundation for one of the prettiest capes of the season. White cloth is appliqued upon it with gilt cord.

The cloth is all a-frlit- ter with beads and pale-green silk peeps from beneath the fish-net. A band of white angora edges the cape, and the lining and collar are of the same material. Another is dull-gTeen duchesse Batin, with a deep edging of chinchilla about it. To match the fur a scroll work of steel beads is sewed on the satin. The collar is of the fur and the lining pink velvet.

As in the illustration, many capes have huge hoods, cut after an 18th century pattern. These hoods encircle the neck and add a quaint air to the gar ment. A cape for the promenade is of tight- curled, black astrakhan. In shape it driving cape, double-breasted and fastened with large pearl buttons. A collar or Alaska sable completes it.

Of still another I could tell, of sable with velvet points appliqued and Jet and white ribbon. But of capes, there is no end. Chicago News. SAYS M'KINLEY IS FOR GOLD. Senator Sherman Writes a Letter la Which Be Claims to Speak for the Major on the Honor Question.

If has never preached poli ties, ana attempts by the members of his church to "draw him out" in dis cussion have invariably been futile; but he was found to be heterodox at the ballot box, and he had to go. As a preacher Mr. Cleveland is said to have earnestness and force; he certainly has discretion.

With such qualifications he shouldn't have to go far to find a more congenial pulpit and a more liberal congregation; and meanwhile the church at Chaumont will doubtess look around for a rattling good high tariff spellbinder to officiate as its shepherd.
