THE NEWS AND OBSERVER, RALEIGH, N. SUNDAY MORNING, MARCH 9, 1947. II-3 Few Jobs Open for Rookies as Big League Exhibitions Begin REDS HAVE FOUR UNCLAIMED SPOTS Barring Injuries, World Champion Cards Will Field Veteran Nine By JACK HAND. Tampa, March -Rookles must shelve their clippings and produce on the ball field starting tomorrow when 14 of the 16 major league clubs swing into action in the first full dress exhibition scheduled of the spring season. Although there has scattered firing in Puerto Rico, beery Venezuela, Havana, and Miami, most of the teams have confined themselves to pepper games and calisthenics.

Barring injuries, the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals should field an all -veteran team with their holdover title infield of Stan Musial, Red Schoendienst, Marty Marion, and Whitey Kurowski. Leftfield is the only question mark and they have Erv Dusak, Harry Walker or Dick Sisler to join Terry Moore and Enos Slaughter in the garden. A recruit catcher does have a club behind Joe Garagiola Del chance to break into the Louis Sand Rice, currently sidelined with a shoulder separation. Del Wilber probably is the answer.

None of the Red Birds get a chance to show their stuff until Wednesday when they dedicate Al Field at St. Petersburg by playing New York Yankees. "However, the Cards and the Philadelphia Athletics are the only big leaguers will be idle tomorrow. Meet Phils. Boston Red Sox, defending American League champs, will open ay long training grind by opposing the Philadelphia Phillies at Sarasota.

Sevetal promising farm club grads have crowded into Joe Cronin's camp, angling for the wide open third base and richtfield positions. Shoffner, a .305 hitter at Louisville, and Rip Russell of the 1946 team, lead the fight for the hot corner job. Sam Mele, Eastern League batting champion at Scranton, with a 342 mark, is waging a battle with holdovers Leon Culberson and Tom McBride, Pete Layden, who hit .327 af New Orleans, and Bill Goodman, the $50,000 buy from Atlanta, rightfield. Detroit, which may be the Sox top contender. starts its game schedule in Tampa against the revamped Cincinnati Reds.

Manager Steve O'Neill of the Tigers has a first base and rightfeld problem. The rest of ciub is about the same as last year. Roy Cullenbine is the likely successor 16 Hank Greenberg at first unless Rookies Jack McHale or Bob Moyer show too much home run power. Pat Mullin and Cic Wertz, a .301 hitter at Buffalo, figure in the rightfield argument. Reds Have Vacancies.

Cincinnati presents the golden opportunity for the major league prospect with shortstop, first base, centerfield and rightfield open for questions. Now that President Warren Giles has indicated the Reds no longer are concerned about Eddie Miner's future plans, Benny Zientara, Kermit Wahl, and Claude Corbitt are in the shortstop fight. Ted Kluszewski, the big football player from Indiana who hit .352 in class at Columbia. S. his first year out, may oust Bert Haas from first base.

Only Augie Galan is set in the outfield where Frank Baumholtz, the Cleveland Rebels basketball star, and holdover Eddie Lukon are good bets for the other jobs. The Yankees and Brooklyn continue their rivalry in Havana with the New York first base situation still unsettied. Tommy Henrich has been used on the bag with Bobby (Golden Boy) Brown in right. Nick Etten and George McQuinn also rate in the first base picture. Brooklyn probably won't be set until the opener.

depending on the ability of Arky Vaughan to come back and the play of Rookie Lou Ruchser around. first. Nobody will break up the outer combine of Pete Reiser, Carl Furillo, and Dixie Walker, Question at Short. The Boston Braves, who play the Yankees' second squad at Ft. Lauderdale, will go with at least one rookie -Earl Torgeson, on first base.

Outside of a shortstop question between Dick Culler and Sibby Sisti, the rest of the team appears set. Washington, which opens with Chattanooga at Orlando, has moved Gerry Priddy to shortstop. The only freshman with a chance to break in as a regular is second sacker Eddie Lyons, The Phillies open against the Red Sox with Willie (Puddin' Head) Jones, the $16,000 bonus player, bidding for the only open job, shortstop.
