4C January 4, 1976, Lincoln, Sunday Journal and Star Osborne Answers Critics Sooner Cagers Bested NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Oral Roberts, led by 6-foot-9 Harold Johnson, used its height advantage to dominate the boards and rolled to a 64-58 college DasnciDaii victory over UK-lahoma Saturday. ORU jumped to a quick 14-point lead to open the game and Richmans Sport Coat Clearance SALE CoatlMed From Pojje 1C two reasons that the Arizona State game would be difficult to quarterback. It turned out to be three reasons. "First of all." he explains, "they had great defensive people.

Nobody believed me when I said that in advance of the game, but their overall defense was the best we faced all season with the possible exception of Oklahoma. "And ASU's linebackers, ends and defensive backs were the best we faced including Oklahoma. All they lacked were the Selmons. Defense Applied Pressure "Secondly," Osborne adds, "we knew their defense would apply more heat than anyone we had played against all year, what with all their blitzing and stunting. The third thing which made the game difficult turned out to be field position.

We started out with the ball on the 1, 3, 4 and 9 on four occasions," Osborne recalls, "and not once on their side of the 50. Arizona State had been in the habit of turning the ball over four or five times a game, often deep in their own territory. But not the day they played us." Osborne said he called Fenagamo while he was in California this past week. "I always try to communicate with any player who is likely to be down in the dumps. I called Vince to make sure our line of communication is open to be sure that he understood, once again, why I had done what I did.

"I had heard the story that Vince was supposed to have 'told me off on the and answered, "You know me better than that." Hope For Best Osborne says he is sure the coaches will spend the next weeks recruiting, "work hard again this spring and hope that things pay off successfully next fall. "At the start of this last year," Osbome adds, "I'm sure we have all been mighty glad to anticipate a 10-2 finish. We started with the fewest number of starters comiitg back that we've had in years. And then we lost (defensive tackle Ron) Pruitt right away. "And I'm sure if we'd lost the first two and won the last 10 we'd have wound Up rated higher in the final poll than ninth.

"What hurt us was some guy in Las Vegas saying we were 14 points better than Arizona State and ail our fans thinking it was going to be a cakewalk. "The players didn't take ASU lightly. They were in a good frame of mind, although I'm sure the loss to Oklahoma look off some of the edge. "But all of us players and coached thought we were going to win right up to the last minute on that final drive." Almost in amazement, the Nebraska coach concluded, "We won 10 games in a row and then lost to the No. 1 and No.

2 teams in the nation. In fact, were the ones who put them up there. It wasn't as though we lost to some humpty-dumpties. Beating us is what gave them the stature to become No. 1 and No.

2. And yet it seems people think we committed some kind of a national disgrace. You'd think we wound up 0-12, not 10-2 "We won 10 games in a row and then lost to the So, and So. 2 team in the nation. Yet it seems people think we committed some kind of a national disgrace.

You'd think we wound up 0-12, not 10-2." Nebraska coach Tom Osborne. sidelines. The fact is he didn't give me so much as a dirty look. Vince Great Next Year "I have never had a better young man to work with than Vince. He has never been insubordinate and his training habits are the best.

With his added experience plus spring ball this year, he'll be great next season." Ferragamo says he was glad to have the extra chat with his coach. "My parents were in Arizona for the game and we had already planned to leave early the next morning for home, so I didn't really get a chance to talk to Coach Osborne except briefly after the game. "Terry did have a good pre-game practice period and I suppose those four interceptions Humm threw in the Sugar Bowl game entered his (Osborne's) mind. "We wanted to get things straight between us. and we did," Ferragamo added.

Asked about the breaking training' rumors, the friendly Ferragamo laughed Reg. 39 88 seemed to be on the way to a rout. But Oklahoma's young team refused to fold and although they could never overtake the Titans, the Sooners managed to make a game out of it down the stretch, climbing to within four at 54-50 with about five minutes to go.
