Shervette Mrs. Willis Kramer Is Honoree; Mrs. Whitaker Gives Luncheon R. E. Shervette, was hostess Saturday at a bridge luncheon and shower honoring Mrs.

Willis Krebs Kramer, a recent bride, who formerly was Miss Mildred Petway of Enfield. When guests arrived, a two-course luncheon was served at tables placed in the dining room, living rooms and halls. The dessert that followed the turkey course was of ices in shapes of bells and slippers, served with individual cakes decorated in green. The guest of honor, with a few relatives and special friends, sat at the dining table which was decorated beautifully in bridal appointments. After luncheon, the bride was presented a shower of miscellaneous gifts from the friends present.

Players at ten tables enjoyed progressive contract. Mrs. Kramer received the high score award in the game and Mrs. Shervette also presented her a guest of honor prize. Mrs.

Sam Arrington Dunn held the prize for traveling honors, and remembrances were presented out-of-town guests, Mrs. Jimmie Moore of Lexington, and Miss Evelyn Ogburn of Tarboro. Those present for the luncheon and shower were Mrs. Kramer, Mrs. P.

Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Edwards were hosts to the Evening Bridge Club at their home on Friday evening.

Mrs. R. Hunter Pope and Sam Arrington Dunn won the high score prizes, and Mrs. Elsie DeLysle, the traveling honor prize. Mrs.

Jimmie Moore of Lexington, received a guest remembrance. A dessert course was served with hot coffee at tables centered with burning red tapers. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Sam Arrington Dunn, Mr.

Dunn, Foster Hofler, and Dr. R. W. Bunn. An interesting meeting of the Enfield Garden Club was held in the Library, in the Masonic Temple Building.

Friday afternoon, with the president, Mrs. A. M. Atkinson, in charge. Each person present donated 25 cents instead of trying to sponsor something to raise money before Christmas.

Absent members are asked to donate the same amount to the treasurer. Mrs. Lillie Sullivan, librarian, gave an excellent report of the one month that the library has been open. She reported 584 books belonging to the local library, 201 readers. dally circulation 30, and average attendance daily, 40.

Several table and mantle arrangements were shown and Mrs. Paul Brown, won first prize on her mantle display. She was awarded a pitcher, the prize donated by Mrs. Ivy Watson. to be given to the winner at this meeting.

Mrs. Ira D. Wood won the traveling prize, a vase. for the best table arrangement. Judges were Mrs.

W. R. Mann of Whitakers, Miss Nellie Bryan Newton and Mrs. M. E.

Herman. Mrs. Powell Honored. Arthur Powell was honoree at a birthday party at her home on Sunday. Covers were laid for Mr.

and Mrs. Powell. Frank Powell, Mr. and Mrs. Louie Powell and daughter, Mr.

and Mrs. Linwood King and children, Mrs. Eva Smith and children all of Turkey; Mr. and Mrs. C.

T. Lamm and children of Durham and a number of neighbors and friends. Dr. and Mrs. Earl Butz of Lafayette, were the only members of Mrs.

Powell's family not present. MR. and MRS. JOSEPH MARR TINGLE of Washington, N. natives of Beaufort County, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Monday, December 12.

They will be at home to friends and relatives on Monday between the hours of 2 and 5 p. m. and 7 and 10 p. m. The "Open House" events will be held at their residence on East Main Street.

Tingle before marriage was Miss Mary Elizabeth Bailey. Hosts in Chapel Hill Entertain For Miss Jordan and Dr. Smith Christmas Parties Are Given; Patriotic Groups Hold Meetings Chapel number of Christmas parties were given by campus groups during the week-end, and Miss Rebecca Jordan and Dr. Sherman Smith, who will be maried this month, were honored at two parties. Miss Jordan and Dr.

Smith were entertained with a kitchen shower by Mr. and Mrs. Earl A. Slocum Saturday night. After the presentation of gifts, the hostess served a refreshment course.

Among those attending were Miss Jordan, Dr. Smith, Dr. and Mrs. Glen Haydon, Dr. and Mrs.

The honorees were presented with silver candlesticks. Couple high score prize, a fruit cake, was given to Mr. and Mrs Hanft. Mrs. Wyck Owen and Dr.

W. Bost received prizes for low score. Traveling prize was won by Dr. N. G.

Newman, Jr. The University chapter of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity entertained about 50 underprivileged children at a Christmas party at the fraternity last night. The reception rooms were decorated in the holiday motif with holly, mistletoe and a tree with colored lights. The children were presented gifts and stockings of fruits and candies. Ice cream and cake were served.

The Chi Omega entertained active members and pledges with a Christmas party at the sorority house Friday night. Santa Claus attended and presented gifts marked with short verses. Hot chocolate and cookies were served. About 60 attended. The Pi Phi's gave open teas Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.

Cookies and tea were served by the reception committee. Two hundred guests attended during the two days. Miss Anne Moore received at Spencer hall house tea Wednesday fternoon The tea table was arranged with a bowl of holly and silver candlesticks bearing white tapers. Among Christmas parties planned by campus groups for next week are a reindeer rambl. planned by the Pi Phi's for Sunday night and a Christmas tree for Archer house residents Tuesday night.

The Davie Poplar chapter, D.AR., was entertained at its December meeting by Mrs. Ellen Moxley and her daughter, Mrs. F. Bradshaw, at the home of Mrs. Bradshaw Tuesday afternoon.

After the business session. the hostesses served punch and cookies. The Leonidas Polk chapter, U. D. met with Mis.

G. K. G. Henry Tuesday afternoon. After a discussion of "Christmas in the South During the War Between the States," refreshments were served by the hostess.

Of much interest 1S the appearance of Dr. Frederick H. Koch, director of the Carolina Playmakers, in Memorial hall Sunday night. Dr. Koch will give his annual reading of Dicken's "Christmas Carol." The reading is given as a Christmas greeting from the University, to the students and townspeople.

Ellis, of Garysburg, as assisting hostess, entertained the Music Study Club Friday evening. Plans were formulated to secure artists for the annual musical concert which MRS. J. CLARK JOHNSON of Graham, formerly Miss Hessentine Borders, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Mike L. Borders of Shelby. Mr. Johnson is the son of Mr. and Mrs.

J. R. Johnson of Statesville. is sponsored by the club for the benefit and approval of the town's music-lovers. The evening's program was devoted to Ethelbert Nevin, the American composer, who gained for himself a unique place in music history.

Following a most interesting reading on Nevins' life, by Mrs. Sterling Pierce, these selections were given: Piano duet-AlbaMisses Martha Pierce and Louise Farber; "The Rosary" was sung by Mrs. Foster Jennings, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. N. J.

Shepherd. Miss Mary Anderson played, as an instrumental solo, "Venetian Love Song." While the hostesses were serving a delicious salad plate, Miss Louise Farber played "Narcissus," one of Nevin's lovliest compositions. Mrs. T. H.

The first paper, "My Life and Work," by Adolf Lorenz, was reviewed by Mrs. Ola Chenoweth. and the second paper, which was presented splendidly by Mrs. R. A.

Musgrove, was "Life and Death or the Autobiography of a Surgeon," by Andrea Majacchi. Guests of the were Mesdames Will Selden, C. Tilghman, club, Davis and Miss Lucy Dameron. The hostess served delicious refreshments. and Mrs.

W. C. Castlebery of Apex. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J.

W. Kincheloe in the Baptist parsonage at Rocky Mount on Saturday, November 12. Mrs. Castleberry is daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

S. O'Neal. She attended Severn High School and for the past years held a position at State College. Raleigh Mr. Castleberry attended State College, Raleigh, and is engaged in business his father at Apex.

Mrs. Castleberry wore a dress of teal blue alpaca with dubonnet accessories. Her corsage was Briarcliffe roses and sweet peas. They left immediately after the marriage for an extended wedding trip North. They are making their home at the present with the bridegroom's parents at Apex.

A LARGE SELECTION TO CHOOSE FROM MARTIN'S INC. 305 Fayetteville Street Raleigh, N. C. Cary. -The Gourd Village Garden Club held its monthly meeting at the home Miss Esther Ivey in Cary.

With Mrs. T. F. Wilkerson presiding, the meeting was opened for an informal discussion of the topic for the evening, Christmas decorations. On the mantelpiece were two gourd candle holders containing red candles.

Beside the open fire sat a large gourd with an opening cut in the side. In this container was chemically treated sawdust which was scooped up with a large gourd and poured on the embers to produce vari-colored flames, thus creating a lovely setting for the Christmas tree decorated with brightly colored gourds, a gourd wall basket filled with evergreens and berries, a della Robbia artistically arranged, and a decorative spray of long leaf pine with red bells made of gourds. The Gourd Village Garden Club has recently become affiliated with the International Gourd Society, and on display at the meeting was the exhibit recenlty sent to the International Gourd Society Festival in Pasadena, Cal. Among the blue ribbon winners of this exhibit were a gourd lamp, and two scrapbooks, one contaning photographs of the displays at the Fall Festival of the Gourd Village Garden Club. Red ribbon winners included smoking set made of gourds and a gle specimen of Crown of Thorns.
