completely at bay throughout managed to stave off a worse defeat Georgia struck twice in the second period Vassa Cate speedy sophomore back flashed off tackle for 65 yards for the first touchdown and Sanford Vandiver swept around end for four yards and the other a few minutes later The Gamecock touchdown was the result of a brilliant 69-yard run by Dick Little sophomore speedster who made the play with Ditt as the carrier and the ball went over aoout two feet from the goal First Touchdown The first touchdown by Wolfs boys came shortly after the Tar Heels had been backed well into their own territory- A punt by Rooney was downed by Helms at Carolina's 21 Little made three and then Burnette got away on a 37-yard trip On a reverse to the right Burnette cut in fast slashed through the left side of State's line and headed dowrfleld with Lozier behind him and Rooney coming across The two Techs doubled on Tommy at State's 39-yard line arrti brought him down Two line plays gained five yards D'itt fumbled and recovered for loss of a yard and then Burnette punted out of bounds at the 12-yard line State kicked back the ball was downed at State's 43 and Carolina was on its way On a reverse to the left Watson was shaken loose for 28 yards he was brought down from behind by Rooney snd Kuzma Kraynick made two Fry spilled Watson for no gain snd then aggressive little Crnwell Little offered a nifty play Back to pass Little couldn't find a receiver and Techs were crowding in He started running to his left all the time waving to his receivers to go back Down the sideline headed Mr Little and he wasn't stopped until he'd reached the four-yard line On the very next play the Tar Heels surged on the left side of State's line and Little drove over for touchdown Second Score A long run by Watson good for 21 yards was the play preceding the Burnette Bershak pass which brought the second touchdown Watson was sent away on a reverse to the left and was pulled down by Berlinski at the 35 On the next play Burnette's pass was taken by Bershak at the 20-yard line Two Techs Berlinski and Kuzma were in front of Andy Bershak stopped fainted momertar ily then stepped to the left of the two defenders and scooted by them to touchdown Fumble Sets Stage George Stirnweiss' recovery of State fumble set the stage for Bur nette's touchdown run in the fourth quarter Ren Hoeck cf the Techs fumbled at the State 30 and Stirnweiss scooped up the ball and raced to the goal The ball was dead at point of recovery and so it was put in plav at the 30 Stirnweiss drove for eiglit yarcc The Tar Heels were too long in huddling for the next play and a five-yard penalty was the result They went once more to the firing line and this time Burnette was shaken loose on a reverse to the right Tommy pulled loose from a tackier at the line of scrimmage and only Eddie Berlinski was between him and the goal Burnette whizzed by Berlinski at the 10-yard line near the sideline and breezed the rest of the way Evidently the Tar Heels used that extra time in huddling to cook things up right for sending Tommy away to touchdown State Folks Have Innings State's supporters had their in nings Those two fine defensive stands early in the game were very cheering for Tech fans and very disconcerting to Tar Heel supporters But the Techs offered their backers plenty of chances to cheer about their offensive work They lacked scoring punch against the Tar Heels but they offered lots of ground-gaining efforts which kept alive hopes for a State score Eddie Berlinski a lad who enjoys football so much that even the opposing fans like to see him enjoying himself was the ace in the Tech attack He was State's real threat and he made a number of good runs His feature performance was a 51-yard punt return in the third quarter A quick-kick by Little hit at State's 25 and rolled to the Berlinski scooped up the ball came to the 40 fooled three Tar Heels went wide to the right and down the sideline to the 29-yard line where Little made the tackle after artfully dodging Piloseno blocking for Berlinski State led in first-downs 13 to 8 but Carolina supporters are willing to trade off that advantage for the difference in the point-scoring The Tar Heels with two touchdowns coming on long gains and not counting as first-downs outgained State considerably Carolina ran four less ground plays than the Techs 48 to 52 and wound up with net gains of 298 yards by rushing compared to 184 for State Two Chared It was a hard-fought game but the boys stuck to their knitting just about all the time The only ex ception came early the third Quarter when State's Art Rooney and Carolina's Charlie Slagle a guard misbehaved when Rooney was tackled as he returned a great punt by Burnette Both Rooney and Slagle were chased from the game That "gTeat punt" came on a play which started inches away from the Tar Heel goal and followed a fine punt A kick by Rooney had landed at the 20 and rolled towards the end zone Cecil Brownie State guard managed to fall on the ball despite a fine block by Burnette and so the Tar Heels were backed against their goal Burnette put his foot into the it hit at State's CARO INA SCORES this section The week-end will bring a full store of games for Big Five clubs with another game near enough at hand for these parts it's not hard to see that none will attract the attention that the battle at Durham will The football week-end opens cn Friday night with Wake Forest's Deacons meeting Erskine's Seceders in the Deacs' first home game There are three games on Saturday all on foreign fields: State at Furman (night) Carolina at New York University and Davidson at Virginia Military So that set-up leaves everything wide open for the Duke-Tennessee oncounter It's the feature of Duke's Homecoming Day The game at Durham will bring renewal of one of the greatest of foot-ball coaching rivalries in the South that between Wallace Wsde of Duke and Major Bob Neyland of Tennessee It all utarted back in 1928 at Tuaca-looha Alabama Coach Wade Alabama boys Kicked: off and Gene McEver now head coach at took the ball for Tenn essee at the five-yard line and started id He reached tha 30 40 and mid field without being: checked worked over 1o the other side of th field escaped Alabama's last man and scored Th game was but half a mln Utc old Alabama took the Suther ran it back to the 40 On the next play he broke off-tackle and his blockers led him over the line for a touchdown Two minutes gone two touchdowns acroM Twas in such a way that the Wade Neyland rivalry started The score of that first game by the way: Tennessee 15 Alabama 13 That score should sound very familiar to Duke followers The next year McEver went over for the lone touchdown in a 6-0 victory for Tennessee and Neyland but only after Alabama's final-period rally carried to the one-inch line (maybe closer) They swapped victories durina the next two seasons Alabama won by 18-6 in 1930 in 1931 Wade's first Duke ar ray dropped a 25-2 decision It's Close A cain Things Rot close again the next year Duke went to Knoxville in 1932 with every expectation of taking a bad lick ing It started that way too when Tennessee quickly ran over two touch downs The Vols started off to another tally hut Fred Duke's All America tackle of the next season In terccpted a pass and ran 78 yards for touchdown Then Duke took over con trol and scored again The try for extra point failed and the score stood at 13-all with two minutes remaining The Vols rallied and with Beattie Feathers driving along reached Duke's 20 After three line plays failed Breezy i wynn dropped back and slipped placement through the bars for a 16-13 edge It was Duke's turn in 1933 at Dur ham A field goal by Corky Cornelius in the first quarter put Duke ahead but a safety made it awfully close before the end of the half: Duke 3 Tennessee 2 Then with Crawford putting the brakes on Feathers the Blue Devils scored in the final quarter to make It iu-z Then at Knoxville the season the Vols scored an upset victory Duke had a 6-0 lead at intermission but the Vols came back in the final periods for a 14-6 decision In 1935 the coaching rivalry lapsed with Neyland away irom ivnoxviue for a year That season the Blue Devils scored a 19-6 victory over Major ism uritton charges Another Upset Last year brought another upset at me tsiue Jjevus expense Elmore Hack ney put Duke ahead with a 52-yard punt return but a safety started the vols on the way A series of fast and running plays gave the Vols a touchdown and a 9-6 lead but Duke's Ace marker took a pass from Hackney in the end rone with Tennessee boys all around him and the Blue Devils led 13-9 with three minutes to bo The Blue Devils got the ball on thelr 20 and everything looked safe A line play brought a gain but Duke drew a five-yard penalty for backfield in motion Hackney then broke away both teams were offside Then Parker punt- ea ine Dan went down the side nes and skipped out on Tennessee's 12 It looked even safer for the Blue Devils But the play was recalled and Duke was penalized for being offside Parker punted again The ball follow ed almost the same route it had taken before but Red Harp scooped it in snd broke to the side in the open field Five blockers grouped In front of Harp smashed Parker down and Red dashed over Although the strength of the team can't be judged too well Coach Dizzy McIeod must have something down at Furman In two games the Purple Hurricane has scored 77 points to none for opposition Furman beat Newberry 19-0 under wraps and on Friday night routed Wofford 58-0 June Scott back paced the Hurricane in these games The Techs nevertheless figure to do well They routed Furman last year 27-0 Carolina's invasion of the Violet stronghold is the second in two yenrs Last year In the Yankee Stadium the Tar Heels took a 14-13 triumph They rang up two touchdowns in the opening half and dominated play until the final period Then the Violet rallied and scored twice missed a tie because of failure to convert after the first touchdown Tom Burnette's placements did it for the Tar Heels The Violet rates somewhat stronger this year than in 1936 In the opener ran tip a 37-6 margin over Pennsylvania Military perennial breather for Eastern big shots At LexJng-ton Vp in Lexington they're calling the Davidson-V I meeting "the game Captain Al Fielder and his mates have been waiting for" The luckless Cadets 12-6 victims of Elon and 18-7 victims of Temple in their two games thus far hoping for a kickback that will start entries on the victory side of the ledcer for their new coach Pooley Hubert Most of the Cadets who took a 38-12 licking at Davidson last season are on this year's team and they've waited a year to get a chance to avenge that heavy sixth in a row for uaviason in the schools series ihe schools rivalry dates back to Memphis Tenn Oct Fairway queens ranging from girls in the 'teens to a galaxy of veterans invaded Memphis today for the Southland's first national golf championship The 136 riitrirs representing 32 Ma ten and Ireland will trek to the starting tee Monday morning Among them are several Southern threat who Mill rek to give nixie its first crown since Atlanta's Alexa Stirling won her third title in a row In 1920 Veterans forecait a par round of 79 would win medalist Defeat (Continued From Pags Five) again snd tossed a perfect pas to Ned Iverson in the end lone who made the catch although surrounded by Duke defenders And the score was still 21-6 when Williams' place kick was blocked by Hudgins A 45-yard kickoff return by Bob O'Mara gave Duke another touchdown In short order O'Mara took the ball on his own 20 and was finally downed by Stair on Davidson's 35 Silver Smith back to pass found no one open and it was just as well for he decided to run and was finally forced out of bounds on the Davidson one-yard line O'Mara bucked it across and Duke led by 27-6 Hackney's placekick missed Davidson almost scored on the next kickoff or rather it should be Lafferty for he's Davidson The Teeny one took Brunansky's kick-off on his own five came right down the center of the field to the Duke 40 where he was caught from behind by Hackney three touchdowns that Hackney cut Lafferty out cf and two that Lafferty cut Hackney out of! LafTerty running and passing pushed the ball to the Duke 30 Here lafferty tired to death was taken from the game Hunter his sub passed to Iverson but it was intercepted by Smith on Duke's 20 and he later- ailed to Hackney who went 35 yards to the Davidson 45 O'Mara then went Into action He went off tackle for 12 yards Hackney got three at end O'Mara smashed through for 14 more and a first-down on the Davidson's 16 O'Mara got four more Smith went to the Davidson's six and then got three more but the Blue Devils drew a 15-yard holding penalty to set them back to the 21 But that didn't stop them Smith passed to Hudgins for 19 yards to the Davidson two and after O'Mara had made a yard Smith went over for the touchdown Hackney's place-kick was good and the scoring was over McAfee almost got loose for another Duke touchdown in the final second of play when he intercepted Hunter's pass on his own 45 and ran to the Davidson 25 Hall to Teenyi There was one star that stood out for Davidson and you guessed it without trying This boy should get all the honors any back has ever gotten for he's truly a great football player For the second straight year he kept the Blue Devils in hot water all the time The Davidson line played a grand game for the first half but that was all Little good line play from Davidson could be seen in the last half but maybe it was Duke's good line play instead of Davidson's bad Thoe things must be figured in Eric (The Red) Tipton again led the Duke offensive but a brilliant spark was supplied by the speedy Hackney and a sound wallop was packed by big Bob O'Mara McAfee made his best showing of the year Duke showed plenty of bad spots during the game a string of right ends being sent into action although Herb Hudgins the other fiankman covered himself with glory and played probably the best game on the field among the linemen Dan Hill that Duke tiger in the middle of the line continued advances There was no yardage gained over Dan
