THE NEWS AND OBSERVER, RALEIGH, N. SUNDAY MORNING, APRIL 25, 1937. Feller, Loser in First Start, Forced Out By 'Pulled Muscle' BOB PROVES WILD IN OPENING VERSE Walks Help Browns to Four Runs; Feller Fans 11 in Half- Innings Cleveland, April Feller lost his first official start of the season to the St. Louis Browns, 4-3, today but maintained his record strikeout pace by fanning 11 men in the six innings he pitched before a pulled muscle in his "million dollar" arm forced him from the game. A inning streak of wildness -during which the Browns got all their runs and two of the they bagged off Feller -heralded the downfall of the major league strikeout king.

Serious. Dr. Edward B. Castle, club physician, said the Injury, to Feller's arm, which many baseball observers describe as the fastest since Walter Johnson, was not serious. Iowa Bob himself said he would be ready for action in a couple of days.

The 18-year-old schoolboy, although losing his 1937 American League opener after weathering a second-inning storm potentially as serious as the first, had the scrapping Hornsbymen churning the atmosphere at a rate virtually equalling that with which he hung up the strikeout mark of: 17 last season. Whiff, Whiff, Whiff. Feller started by walking Knickerbocker. After Allen flied to Campbell, Vosmik singled. Bell and Manager Rogers Hornsby walked, foreing Knickerbocker.

Clift struck out, but the schoolboy walked Davis, forcing in Vosmik. Then Hemsley rapped a single over second, bringing in Hornsby and Clift. Pitcher Jim Walkup, in trouble much of the game but equal to it except in the second, struck out to end the inning. Feller added a strikeout of Hornsby in the second; whiffed Davis, the third; the Hemsley, and Walkup in order, in fourth; Bell in the Knickerbocker, fifth, and wound up his abbreviated chore by whiffing Knickerbocker Allen in the sixth. andhe Indians pushed over their three runs on a sharp outburst 1 in the Although threatening all afternoon -they totaled, eight hits Brown's six-failed to produce timely hits and several toe times needed a traffic light system to keep runners from being picked off the bases.

Hale doubled to right, Campbell walked, Pytlak tripled to left to bring in two runs. Feller surprised everyone by a neat single to right, scoring Pytlak. The inning and the Tribe's scoring abruptly ended when Hughes forced Lary, who had walked, and Averill hit into a double play. From there on it was a pitcher's battle and Walkup held up against the Iowa rookie, who got better and better as the game progressed, and his successor Ivy Paul Andrews, a former Brownie. St.

SELKIRK LEAD IN YANK WIN Tony Homers in George's Triple in 10th Beats Red Hose, 6 to 05 Boston, April New York Yankee siege guns finally warmed up today, but it took ten innings before Tony Lazzeri and George Selkirk bombarded the Red Sox into a 6-5 defeat.

Scoring the first victory in two starts, the Yanks made only nine hits off Lefty Grove and two other Boston hurlers, compared to the 11 the Sox gathered from Monte Pearson and Johnny Murphy, One of the New York hits was the first homer for Murderers' Row this season--a round-trip clout by Tony Lazzeri in the eighth--and another was a game-winning two-run triple by Twinkletoes George Selkirk in the The Sox came back strong in their half of the extra frame. However, with the bases loaded only one out after Pinky Higgins' double and a pair of walks, the best they could do was to bring one run across. Fritz Ostermueller, third of the Sox pitchers, was charged with the defeat. Murphy, relieving Pearson in the eighth, was credited with the win. A crowd of 25,000 turned out to open Fenway Park for the season.
