The Rangers have signed Jeff Mathis to a two-year contract, a deal first reported by the in- trepid Ken Rosenthal and confirmed by a source. The Mathis signing ap- pears to shut the door to a Robinson Chirinos return as, true to his word, gener- al manager Jon Daniels sought a defensive up- grade be- hind the plate.

Daniels did not return a message seeking information on the reports. Mathis, 35, spent the past two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks. a 14-year veteran who started his career with the Los Angeles An- gels, but, curiously, Mathis has never caught more than 100 games in his career. Mathis is a defense-first catcher who has a career .198 batting average and 48 homers in 2,419 at- bats. He has a reputation for working well with pitching staffs, something that would be coveted for a rebuilding team, and for being a solid clubhouse guy.

He could also help de- velop young catchers Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Jose Trevino. Kiner-Falefa is still trying to convert to catch- ing after starting his pro- fessional career as an infielder, and he broke into the majors this year as an infielder. He is expected to be on the Opening Day roster. Trevino, who also made his MLB debut in 2018, will be in spring training but could be slowed after having surgery on his shoul- der in July. He is the bet- ter defensive catcher, but his bat has lagged behind.

The Rangers are interviewing for those positions, but the hires pending. However, if the addi- tions of Ortiz and Rangel are any indication, the next hires could be some- what inexperienced but with a solid development background. Woodward acknowl- edged that the inexperi- ence might be concerning to some, but he is looking forward to growing and learning alongside them. In some ways, he said, it could turn into an ad- vantage.

Ortiz was the Los An- geles assistant hitting coach last season and left a favorable im- pression on Woodward, the third-base coach, in how he teaches the swing and with the kind of quality person he is. Ortiz also knew Rangel, who spent four years in banking after his playing career fizzled out in Dou- ble A. He has held a varie- ty of roles in minor-league coaching, from coordina- tor to focusing on the mental side of the game.
