FLA DEATHS THE HERALD 4B 1 TUESDAY, JULY 27, 2004 ALBERT TRESVANT First black mayor in Dade BY TRENTON DANIEL Albert Tresvant, who in 1975 became the first black mayor of Opa-locka and in Dade County, died Sunday at Jackson Memorial Hospital from complications of cardiac arrest, family members said. He was 78. "He was a dynamic political man, very soft-spoken, but carried a lot of weight," said Virginia Wilkinson Tresvant, 80, who had been married to TRESVANT her "gentle giant" for 61 years. "He was a very strong man." Tresvant was born in Brunswick, and moved to South Florida at the age of 5 with his grandmother and his aunt, who became a surrogate mother after his mother died at an early age. He was raised in Liberty City, where he attended Liberty City Elementary and Dorsey High School, his wife said.

After finishing high school, Tresvant married Virginia Wilkinson, who today is a retired church musician and pianist. He started his own business, Al's Upholstery, in Liberty City. In an attempt to unite an Opa-locka heavily divided along race lines blacks lived in the east side's "colored town," whites in the west's "white town" Tresvant ran for public office in the early 1970s, family members say. Tresvant was elected as the city's first black commissioner in 1972. Two years later, he ran for mayor and the election ended in a tie vote.

Tresvant and Kenton Wells agreed to split the two-year term. Wells, a nine-year board veteran, took the first watch. Tresvant took office a year later at a time when almost no blacks held public office in the county. "It was empowering," Marvin Dunn, a psychology professor at Florida International University and author of a book on Miami African Americans, said about Tresvant's election. "He was an icon; he was a legend.

In my view, he's one of the most historic figures ever to come out of the town." After Tresvant withdrew from the political limelight, he stayed tuned in to Opa-locka politics. He often gave counsel to aspiring politicians who visited him on his front porch or in his living room. Former Commissioner and ex-Vice Mayor Steven Barrett was one audience member. "He was the one who gave me advice on how to strategically run for mayor," said Barrett, who said he threw fish fries at his home before serving on the commission from 1988 to 1996. "If you wanted to talk to Mr.

Tresvant, you just showed up." Tresvant also worked as a driver for then-commissioner Helen Miller in the mid-1990s and, in 1999, helped organize the Opa-locka Soup Kitchen with then-Commissioner Bobby Bradley, Pastor Alder Alfred Clark and Randolph Aikens, the city's parks and recreation director. In 1998, the commission approved that Northwest est 21st Court at Northwest 142nd Street be named "The Honorable Albert Tresvant Sr. Street." In addition to his wife, Tresvant is survived by his children Joy Tresvant Carey, Walter Tresvant, Adell Tresvant Hackett, Debbie Wiley, Portia Livingston, Leslie Osborne, 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The city of Opa-locka will hold a candlelight vigil 7 p.m. Thursday at City Hall, 777 Sharazad Blvd.
