Cynthia Clawson feels missing to debut Monday trio is dead CVTlthia fHflWsnn Whn ranrta iff Cynthia Clawson, who will appear as a regular this summer on "The Newcomers" show on Monday nights on CBS television, made her first appearance as a vocalist in a Baptist church in Houston at the age of three. Since then, the 22-year-old Howard Payne College graduate has come a long way as a performer. CBS executives reportedly are considering making "The Newcomers," which will replace the "Carol Burnett Show" for the summer, a regular show in December of January.

And they're predicting stardom for Miss Clawson. She will sing "Put Your Hand in the Hand of the Man From Galilee" on the opening show, July 12 at 9 p.m. central time. Veteran tv personality Dave Garroway will host the show and Nelson Riddle will conduct the music. Another Texan in the cast, selected from 2,000 performers adutioned, will be Peggy Sears, Miss Teenage Dallas.

Although Miss Clawson will debut as a regular, "The Newcomers" will not be her first television appearance. She has sung on the Lawrence Welk Show and on the Ail-American College Show, hosted by Arthur Godfrey. She has also appeared widely at evangelistic crusades, concerts and youth meetings and has made solo appearances on Evangelist James Robison's syndicated television show, "Get Together With James Uobison." She recorded an album of contemporary religious music recently released in Dallas on the Crescendo label. Miss Clawson, whose musical HARPER'S Super Special Buy! JOY LIQUID DETERGENT GIANT 22 SIZE range and versatility have impressed Hollywood's most seasoned professionals, was graduated from Howard Payne in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in music. During her four years, honors included selection for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities and Most Talented Woman Student.

She played Maria in West Side Story and played the lead in several college operettas. In the spring of 1970 she was featured in a musical variety show, "Happy Daze," which played to a full house during two performances in the Brownwood High School auditorium. An active church worker and strong advocate of her Christian faith, Miss Clawson says her opportunities in show business have resulted from prayer. Following the taping of "Put Your Hand in the Hand of the Man from Galilee," a TV engineer said to her, "The way you sing that makes me want to put my hand in His." "That's why I sang it," she said. Her music, says her father, Rev.

Tom Clawson, pastor of Hot Wells Baptist Church, San Antonio, has been a major interest since she made her first public appearance as a three- year-old. "In fact," he says, "she was humming before she could talk, and she still sings herself to sleep at the age of 22." But, says a Hollywood observer, "No one sleeps when Cynthia sings. The usually bustling studio quietens and everyone, including fellow performers, listens when she rehearses. That's a compliment from show business pros." DALLAS (AP)-With fto substantial clues in the disappearance of wealthy investor Robert L. "Tex" Roberts and two elderly women, the chief investigator said Tuesday he thinks the trio is dead.

Lt. Jim Hobbs of the Dallas County Metro Squad said: "I never really thought they were alive. Now I feel sure they are dead." Hobbs said photographs and detailed descriptions of the three were circulated throughout the nation. He said two officers have been assigned to the case full time since it first came to light during a court of inquiry last May. He said there have been almost no leads at all.

dinafily, we'd expect to get some kind of response from these pictures," Hobbs said, "but we haven't even gotten a crank call. That's one reason we think they may be dead." Roberts, 85; his aunt, Jessie I. Forsythe, 89; and Anna Farley, 72, all disappeared last year. A Dallas lawyer, Leon C. Horton, told the court of inquiry he had been given Roberts' power of attorney before Roberts disappeared but Horton was charged with forging the document.

Horton is free under a $5,000 bond. Hobbs said findings of the court of inquiry and information gathered by the police are expected to be taken before the grand jury within two weeks. Team takes honors SANTA ANNA (BBCJ Guy Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Allen of Santa Anna, and his teammate, Tee Woodman of Oklahoma, won first and third places last week in an Oklahoma rodeo, it was reported.

Burning mattress Brownwood firemen answered a call to a burning mattress at 600 W. Lee St. at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The mattress was in a home owned by Joseph F.Dodson and occupied by Bill Pierce.

Loot dropped at burglary scene An apparently nervous burglar dropped his loot just a short distance from where he broke in at Pinkie's Liquor Store at Austin and Carnegie early this morning. According to Brownwood Police Lt. Vic Fowler, entrance to the liquor store was gained by someone smashing in the side glass door. The commotion was reported to Brownwood police by a neighbor and arriving at the scene moments after the reported incident was Patrolman Jack Bruce. Fowler said Bruce found unbroken bottles of beer and whiskey near the store.

The incident was still under investigation this morning, 18-to-21 voters eligible here Brown County residents between 18 and 21 who registered to vote this year are now eligible to vote in all elections, county tax assessor- collector Hugh Allcorn reminded Tuesday, They became eligible to vote in all elections with the final approval of the U. S. Constitutional amendment lowering the voting age from 21 to 18, Allcorn added that anyone who has become 18 since the voter registration deadline in February may now register to vote. They must register at least 30 days before an election to be eligible to vote in that election however. up Hot fa bid today WASHINGTON (AP) James R.

Hoffa and his successor as Teamsters President are emphasizing Hoffa's severance" of ties with the world's largest union as the U.S. Board of Parole takes up his new bid for freedom. Amid reports his resignation from the Teamsters presidency and other union offices might constitute the "new and substantial information" needed for a rehearing, Hoffa has asked the board for another chance at parole; The seven-member board was to take up Hoffa's application today. Affirmative votes from two members are necessary to move up a review set for next June. The board denied Hoffa's second request for parole last March.

Parole Board Chairman George J. Reed stressed the board would not consider whether to free Hoffa at this meeting. "We will be determining whether there is new and substantial information that was not before the board at its last en bane (full board) review of Mr. Hoffa's case," Reed said. "If two members feel that there is, we will set a date for a rehearing on the merits." Should the board decide to give early review to Hoffa's case, the entire record will be considered with the new information, Reed said.

Frank E. Fitzsimmons, Hoffa's hand-picked successor, said in a news conference Tuesday Hoffa will not run the union from behind the scenes if Fitzsimmons is elected to a five- year term at the Teamsters convention under way in Miami Beach, Fla, "I don't know the anticipation of Hoffa, but if I'm elected, the power remains with me," Fitzsimmons said. Just four days before a 9(Way appeal period ran out, Hoffa's son, Detroit lawyer James P. Hoffa, filed an application for rehearing.
