NEWS AND OBSERVER, RALEIGH, N. FRIDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 11. 1927. 10 State and Duke Elevens Primed for Clash on Durham Grid Today TITLE HINGES ON CLASH TODAY ON DUKE'S GRIDIRON Devils and Techs To Rival Firmaments of Brilliant Stars CLOSE OBSERVERS PIT TEAMS ON EVEN BASIS 6,000 Bleacher Seats To Be Put On Sale This Morning; Record Crowd Expected To Witness Clash On Hanes Field, Starting at Two O'clock; McDowall, Warren and Other Tech Stars To Oppose Buie, Jankoski and Devil Luminaries With the largest crowd in the history of Durham expected to witness the event, the elevens of N. C.

State College and Duke University will clash at 2 o'clock today on Hanes Field at Duke University in game which has every earmark of deciding the 1927 football championship of North Carolina. Last night everything was in readiness for the game so far 88 the rival grid camps were concerned, but there was plenty of worrying on the part of gridiron followers who hope to the gamo today and who were giving great concern to the matter of getting in Hanes Field and then finding a seat after they had entered. However, six thousand bleacher seats are to go on sale this morning at 10 o'clock at Hanes Field and Alumni terday that fans would plenty Secretary R. E. Thigpen stated, yesaccommodations their comfort.

Reserved seats for the game have been sold out, since early this week, and these prize pasteboards could not be obtained yesterday even when prices above the regular scale were offered. Fans have followed the two teams closely, looking forward since the opening of the season to this Armistice Day clash which even then took on championship aspects in view of the great prospects for a titular team possessed at the two institutions. There was little in the way of new developments from the rival camps yesterday, and fans concerned themselves mainly with discussion of this ticket business. Mr. Thigpen and his aides have prepared to handle a crowd of 10,000 or more and indications are that such a turnout will easily be on hand this afternoon.

Hatcher And Bennett To Start. The Duke line-up announced last night as the likely starting nation carried the name of at halfback and of Captain Cocky Bennett at end. These two warriors have not been starting games for the Blue Devils. latcher is at Lake's position in the backfield, and Bennett will be ca the end which retaken over by Kistler. Incently was duction of- Bennett into the line-up is looked upon by Duke followers as good omen, and they point out that a 110 game this season has the game little Devil been injected into a game but what the Blue Devils scored.

Lake has been a great buffer for the rest of the backfield, and his brilliant interference running has played a big part in the Duke offensive. He no doubt will find his way into action shortly after the game opens. The Varsity Unchanged. Otherwise the Duke line-up is the same that Delart has been using 88 his first string combination. At State, Tebell announced that he would send against tire Blue this afternoon the same eleven "Iron Men" who last Saturday played the entire game against Davidson in Greensboro, turning in a 25 to 6 vietory while dong the "iron man" act.

This combination has been worked together throughout the week, and is showing a ordination that is bringing smiles to the Tech mentors and cheer to followers of the West Raleigh institution who feel that today the Pack will humble Duke and ascend to the championship. A victory today for the Technicians would give them a clean slate in North Carolina competition and a full claim to the "Big Five" title. They have previously turned in vietories over Wake Forest, Carolina and Davidson. Duke, on the other hand, has two other "Big Five" tilts after today's game Carolina and Davidson -and must remove them from their path before the title could be claimed in event of a win over the Pack today. Galaxy of Stars to Compete.

Grid fans who witness this afternoon's clash are to see in action a galaxy of stars, quite a few of whom will likely win places on the annual mythical All-State elevens. Duke will offer for the star-gazers, a great passing combination down in the score books as Buie-to-Adama. Also it will offer a human battering ram in the person of Jan Jankoski, a lowbuilt fullback who has not been stopped from scoring by. any opponent of Duke's this season, the Navy Academy included. In the line the Blue Devils have a nifty pair of tackles in Culp and Thompson.

while Thorne, a guard, has played brilliantly in all games this season. But There's The Big Star. But State has in its firmament of stars one whose brilliancy has put his name on the lips of grid fans, not only in the State, but throughout the Southern Conference. In Jack McDowall, State possesses a triplethreat artist who will no doubt prove quite a thorn in the side of the Blue Devils ere the afternoon is over. MeDowall's punting, passing and ballof the Pack which in recent weeks carrying has featured the great drive el has carried it to consecutive victories over Clenison, Wake Forest, Florida, Carolina and Davidson.

MeKELVIN and Piedmont league sectors, is far from clear, but is due to take on a greater degree of visibility after November 15. Right now the Piedmont League is sitting pretty with six clubs lined up in a compact circuit, and prospects that quite few other cities will be. knocking at the front door for entrance after November 15. This prospective knocking hinges on what happens in the Virginia League, but already Norfolk and Richmond have stepped on the Pied mont doormat and announced that they have their fists doubled and arms raised in a knocking position in case everything doesn't pan out lovely in the Old Dominion loop. Virginia Loop Uncertain The Virginia League personnel for next season is a very indefinite proposition.

At the recent meeting of league direetors in Norfolk it was decided that those cities wishing to remain in the league next year notify President W. G. Bramham, who also heads the Piedmont and Sally loops, by November 15 and attach a forfeit check to the notification. It was also suggested at this meeting that perhaps the The baseball horizon along the North. Carolina -Virginia frontier, insofar as it is visible Virginia link Virginia members of the loop might up with the towns in Pennsyl vania and New Jersey into a new circuit.

That idea was that if three Virginia teams stayed in the loop, the league take in Allentown, and Trenton and Jersey City, in the "Skeeter" state. If the fourth Virginia city desired to remain in the loop, it was suggested that Hazleton, Pa. be added to the wheel. But all of that hinges on whether the present cities decide to stick to their berths for another year. Another solution broached at the re- cent meeting of Old Dominion league moguls was to make the circuit an all-Virginia affair.

Piedmont Would Stay Compact. Norfolk and Richmond look farorably upon Piedmont League but it is understood that the Pied-! mont directors do not look so favorably on adding the Virginia cities, Addition of the two Old Dominion cities would enable the cigarette loop to raise its classification to but at the same time inclusion of Richmond and Norfolk would put an end to the business of traveling about by bus and entail quite large expenditures for pullman and hotels, the former of which is an unknown circuit expense and in the latter present of which Piedmont the a comparatively light expense as is to what it would be if two Virginia cities were taken in and the method of play in the league shifted from two-day to three-day stands, as would be absolutely necessary. Others May Seek Places But the lack of enthusiasm of Piedmont moguls for Norfolk and Richmond does not necessarily mean that the eigarette circuit may not yet become an eight-club affair.

It the Virginia League is to crash, that will mean: an absence of baseball in Wilson and Kinston. Get in Light Workouts. The workout this afternoon was distinctly lighter than the previous practices this week.

The coaches called a halt to the daily scrimmages, and instead sent the entire squad through a long and fast signal drill on Emerson Field. Late in the afternoon the first three teams jogged down to the Kenan Stadium for a run on the fresh turf. There the first and third elevens ran through a 30-minute "dummy scrimmage" to polish off their plays. Tonight the entire squad got a short workout in light equipment in the Tin Can, large indoor athletic field. The defense of the locals has been unusually brilliant all season, as is shown by their record of not being scored on in nine games. The offense likewise has been of a high calibre and the victories have been in the main by one-sided scores. Althorgh losing several of last year's most brilliant men, the locals still possess powerful machine, one that has developed rapidly and one is certain to be a contender for the right to represent the east in the annual championship battle at Chapel Hill. Duke, in turn, has Buie as its main tosser with Bennett, Warren, Adams and Jankoski opportunities to show stuff receivers.

anxious, Will Lay-off Hurt? One point of discussion among fans in recent days has been hinged around the open date last week in Duke's schedule. Whether or not this lay-off will damage the team play of DeHart's men has the basis for numerous arguments, arguments which will not be settled until this afternoon. The Blue Devils, while not getting into an actual game, Inst week were put through stiff training and DeHart has announced that -his team is in the pink of condition. State likewise is in great physical shape, and the two elevens will send their full strength into today's game. It will be a great battle, likely decided on a miss here or a slip there with one or the other grasping opportunity and victory simultaneously by the forelock.

At any rate, the fans are colorful afternoon with plenty of action. Who'll win? Who knows! One trend has been clear since State humbled Davidson Saturday the stock of the Pack has soared while that of the Blue Devils has Whereas a close observers were ago, that State fortnight, should be conceded at least seven points when it got down to coin conversation, in recent days this type of conversation has been on an eveneven basis. STATE FRESHMEN WILL PLAY WILDKITTEN TEAM Drennan's Yearlings Invade Davidson For Tilt With Mattox's Team The State College freshmen foothall eleven, better known as the Wolflets, left the city yesterday morning for Davidson College where they will meet the eleven of that school this afternoon, Both teams are trying to come back. The State eleven will present a much better form today than they did last week against the Carolina Tar Babies, The freshmen, Drennen and Passailaigue, have drilled their men hard for the past week. The flashy backs have at last struck their stride and the line is holding better than it had been for the past few days. Trask and Edmonson, halfbacks, are fast, and flashy. Standing out in the line is Captain Manushak, 8 large, tali tackle. The State line-up will probably look like this: Tucker, left end; Manushak, left tackle; McNeill, left guard; Stout, center; Hatcher, right guard; Burdell, right tackle; Futado, right end; Kerr, quarter back: Trask, left halfback; Edmundson, right halfback; Hargrove, full MORRIS' ELEVEN GETS READY FOR TOURISTS Shelby Casualty List Diminishes and Prospects of Victory Increases Shelby, Nov.

injured players are rounding into shape better than I expected and we will be set to give them everything we have in the Asheville game," Coach Casey Morris stated in speaking on Shelby High's chances against Asheville Saturday in the State High school race. The Shelby coach hopes to have every eligible player in good condition by Saturday and wouldn't be so much surprised if his little eleven turns in a victory. There was some hope among fans that the game could be switehed to Friday, Armistice Day, so that mote could attend the game, but the latest information is that the game will be played Saturday afternoon nt Asheville. H. Latham Superintendent of Schools of Winston-Salem sent a telegram to Mr. Rankin today declining to further participate in the series. In this Supt. Latham says: 'We have decided that it will be best not to participate further in football championship elimination series." two cities love their diamond game, and it seems safe that both will make hasty rushes to brush past Norfolk and Richmond on the Piedmont doorstep and do some hurried knocking of their own.

Even if Kinston does not go after a Piedmont berth, as recent dispatches from that city indicated might be the case, the Piedmont need not worry about an eighth member sufficiently close to maintain at least a semblance of the compactness which is the Piedmont's big asset. Inclusion of Wilson in the league would make Rocky Mount anxious to try its hand again and would help baseball both in Wilson and Rocky Mount as the rivalry between those cities is great. Then, too, there is the prospect of other eastern North Carolina towns coming forward with a bid for a berth if Rocky Mount doesn't, while Danville, Virginia, former Piedmont loop city, might make overtures for a return to the league. Pied nont Okey. The Piedmont need not worry.

It is on safe territory for the 1928 campaign, but the condition of the Virginia League is admitted by moguls of the circuit to be "quite shaky." However, there are numerous possible combinations by which baseball may be saved for Norfolk, Richmond, Portsmouth and Petersburg, the Virginia members of the loop, if they wish to retain the diamond game in case the Old Dominion loop is not to continue in its 1927 make-up. Bramham Not Worried. President Bramham, whose guiding influence breezed this trio of leagues over other "quite shaky" riods, is not worrying. He believes that all necessary for some remedial action is for the Virginia League's present cities to make up their minds. Once this is done, plans can be made along definite lines and he has no doubt but what everything will be worked out satisfactorily for baseball, the fans, and the cities concerned.

ROSE HILL WINS AGAIN OVER CLINTON ELEVEN Clinton, Nov. Rose Hill high school eleven decisively licked the local grid team here this afternoon by a 21-7 score. Except for the second quarter when Clinton showed better football form than at any other time, and raced down the field for their touchdown, the Rose Hill boys completely outplayed the locals. The enemy scoring came in the first, third, and last quarters of the game and a Rose Hill back intercepted a pass and was downed about the locals' 20-yard line when the whistele blew ending the game. This was Rose Hills second victory over the Clinton eleven this season.

Baldwin's Squad, Minus Several Stars, Will Play Quantico at Richmond Wake Forest, Nov.

Demon Deacons of Wake Forest left here at 1 o'clock this afternoon for Richmond, where they will encounter the strong Quantico Marine eleven in the Armistic Day game tomorrow afternoon. The game is to be played in the Richmond baseball park, Reports from the Marine camp indicate the Baptists will have quite a job on their hands in trying to subdue the soldiers. The Marines are reputed to have one of the strongest teams in the East. The Wake Forest team that faces the Soldiers tomorrow will be minus a number of its luminaries, due to injuries. Captain Ober, who has not participated in a single game since the State clash, is still on the injured list.

Hackney is out with 8 broken jaw bone, while Phifer, first string center, is incapacitated by a dislocated shoulders bone. The resirve supply of the Deacons is necessarily very scant. Coach Baldwin has Kuykendall, Ayers, Gibson, and Mills to call on in case his backfield men should be injured. He could reinforce his line with Denton, Harris, Padgett and Stroupe. For his end positions Weldon, Weir and Burroughs could fill in, in case of an emergency.
