WEDNESDAY, MORNING, SEPTEMBER 8, 1920 5 LENOIR COLLEGE OPENS WITH RECORD ATTENDANCE Hickory Schools Fall Term With Biggest Enrollment In History (Special to the News and Observer.) Hickory, Sept. College began the fall term today with the largest enrollment since the war and the indications are that the institution have the largest attendance in its history. Since the raising of the $300.000 endowment fund, the faculty has been increased and the college fitted out to take care of more boys and girls.

Cook, widow. of the late Aaron Cook, died et her home in Burke county at the age of 58 years after a long illness. She was a prominent woman, member of the Baptist church and was well known in this community. Mrs. Cook is by five children.

N. Johnson, of Raleigh, Preaches Sermon at Union Meeting Sunday Hamlet, Sept. 7-Sunday was a great day for the Baptists of Hamlet. Their handsome new church building was dedicated, having been built, furnished and all obligations paid. Durthe years 1917 1919 under the leadership of Rev.

J. M. Page, the new church building was erected. building, which had ceased to properly serve the growing congregation was sold, and an excellent location secured, on the corner of Charlotte and Wilmington streets. Sufficient money was realized for the old building to purchase a lot for the church and parsonage and $200 over, which was all the funds on hand when the new church WAS begun.

Having a policy of pay as you go, all the obligations were settled as the work progressed. Today the Hamlet Baptist church represents a value of at least $60,000. In addition to the church building and furniture the congregation has erected a parsonage of eight rooms, of modern design and equipment, this too has been paid for. The dedication sermon was preached by Rev. W. N. Johnson, of Raleigh, and a great sermon it was.

7-It cost the Kinston boys' band $2,000 to make their trip up the coast to Wilmington and Philadelphia and back. They earned it and the outing, which lasted a month and four days, was worth it. The fact that conditions at New York were not favorable for a visit, because of the car strike and other things, caused the 25 youngsters and their director and cook to turn back without a glimpse of the famous skyline of the metropolis. 7--Elijah Dove, colored, is recovering from serious injuries inflicted with a knife by Lewis Barnett, white, at a principal street intersection here, and Barnett has been released on bail. Barnett, according to the police will plead, that Dove started the altercation which resulted in the cutting. The authorities have been informed that Dove cursed the white man, who struck him. Dove then knocked Barnett down, and the latter in rising drew his knife. He cut the negro on the back and one arm, the wounds bleeding profusely.

Durham, N. C. J. L. GALLAGHER IS EXONERATED BY J.

L. Gallagher, arrested Monday on a charge of an affray auring the near riot that took place at the ball park, was unconditionally dismissed and exonerated by Judge W. C. Harris yesterday in city court. From the evidence brought out it appears that Gallagher was not only not guilty of fighting but that he was held and beaten by a crowd of Raleigh sympathizers who jumped on him when they were unable to get Umpire Ammon merely because he yelled out: "Well, Durham beat!" Caley Powell, colored, and his wife, Bertha, toro, been for some time rather undisturbed by their marital vows when it came to a question of fidelity, it was brought out in the trial of Caley today.

Powell was charged with assault upon his wife, once on Friday and again on Monday. Caley went to Norfolk Saturday with another woman, after beating his wife on Friday for unfaithfulness. He returned Monday morning to beat her again for the same reason. Judge Harris felt that Caley's attitude on the question of fidelity was a little warped and sentenced Powell to three months on the Wake county roads for each offense. A.

F. Mathews, charged with drunkenness on the street, was fined $5 and costs. Blanche MeCade, charged with careless and reckless driving, failed to apto accept the plea of sickness pear when called. The court refased. capias was issued.
