He was nipped by dog. Bartock says it's the first settlement under his new law. Earl her arm's length and tilted his head to admire it. Doff said, "Here, Dave. Take a cat too." "No, no! You fellows make somebody else happy with those.

This is plenty. And thanks. This fellow will be good company for me." Piney said, "Name him CotCarnival, tony do that! And I'll remember the fun we had together, boys. I surely will." Piney noticed how quiet Dave's holding the dog. He hantzedethis the first time since they met him that those brown hands had been wasn't a nervous person exactly, his hands were just active, busy with something everyheynpoth shook hands with him, told him goodby and watched him get into his car and drive away.

"Golly, but he's a swell guy," Doff said. "Yeah, he certainly is." "I wonder what kind of business he's in. He didn't look like a farmer exactly, but he knew about Louisiana strawberries, a all right." "'He knew about trapping too," Piney said. "Maybe he's a trapper." "Oh, boy!" "Come on," Piney said. "'We'd better for the wagon." They got to the lot behind Hollaman's ptorant just as Spang was swinging mules around to follow Jug's wagon out into the street.

"Y'all near-'bout had yoreselves a fur piece of a walk," he said crossly as they climbed into the tail end of the wagon. They carefully put their prizes, three cats and two dogs, on some gunny sacks to prothe wagon. "Etta turned the tect them the jolting, of seat and eyed collection. They were out of town and on the road home when Doff noticed that she was still sitting with her neck twisted, staring at the ornaments. He nudged Piney, got up and picked up all three of the cats and held them out to Etta.

Her eyes moved up to his face then her tight mouth twisted into a slow uncertain smile and reddened out hands, and shaking! took visibly, the cats, gathering them carefully into her arms. With her eyes still on Doff, her lips loosened as though she wanted to say something then they to quiver and she them again and turned away from him. And she rode with the three plaster cats clutched to here bony breast, never taking eyes off them all the way home. It was dark before the boys got chores done and went into "the kitchen for the cold snack Etta had put out for them. When they had eaten they went to their room, happy and weary, and fell into bed.

After a few minutes, Piney said, "Did you see how she smiled when you gave her the cats? She made you a real smile. It was a thing to see, wasn't it?" But Doff was sound asleep. Chapter XIII. Snaps are the undersized cotton bolls that are late in opening or do not open at all and have to be snapped open to get the meager tuft of low -grade cotton. Only Piney and Doff had been sent to the field to do the snap picking.

Doff was up the slope, dragging his sack behind him, arched against the afternoon sky, and Piney was running some, rows near the timber line along the branch. Spang had come to the field to check on them, and was standing not far from where Piney was picking, reared back on his heels with his forearms cradled in the bib of his overfalls. Piney straightened up to ease his back for a moment and saw a man coming down the field toward them. He was a tall and well-dressed man, but of such thin build that his trousers flapped grotesquely about his legs as he walked. When he came up, Spang glanced indifferently and without a word of greeting, went on watching Piney at his picking.

man brought himself to halt, pulled out a handkerchief patted his long red face and said. "Spang Mauley?" Spang nodded and said, "Yurp," without looking at him. "My name is Boles. Attor. He held out a card.

Spang glanced at it without taking it, shifted his cud and spat on a cotton stalk. Then he gave his tobacco a hard squeeze with his jaw muscles and said, "Yeah?" "I came out to ask you a few questions regarding the status of a certain boy you have Piney heard that much before he moved on down his row. The men began to talk in low tones but heard Spang say, "No. T'other one." Then they both glanced toward Piney and turned and walked down along the edge of the timber, stopping some yards away. Piney was suddenly, terribly frightened.

He knew somehow that the man had come about Doff, and that it was something bad. He didn't know how he knew. he just did. The row he was working bent with the timber line just a few yards ahead. When he passed that thrust of fetterbush he would be out of Spang and the stranger.

He began picking fast, moving as swiftly down the row as he thought he dared without attracting their attention.
