BY APPOINTMENT ONLY Senate Speeds Up Consideration Of Two Bills Today <lly Un|t«tl The Mcnnle goes into session «.» hour curlier thim usual lodny to .speed up consideration of dcinobil- i/.'it.ion bills. Two measures .arc Tioforc the chamber—the federal proKi'fun for unemployment compensation proposed in the Muri'ay-Kilgorc bill and the states' rights program in Lhc George bill. However leaders hold only slight hope for a vote today. Sponsors of the Murray-Kilgore bill are seeking a compromise with a. seemingly stronger Rcpublfcrtn- | Democratic coalition which is • backing Che Gcoi'KC states' rights bill. The chief stumbling block is the question of whether the federal government should set jobless benefit standards. The leaders of the states' rights coalition — Senator George ot Georgia and Senator Arthur Van- dcnbci'K of Michigan—arc determined that each slate should make its own decision. Meanwhile, War Production Chief Donald Nelson is squaring off for another round with Army leaders. He is asking the joini chiefs-of- I staff to review the Army's supply needs to sec whether any reductions can be made. . Nelson says he has sent the military leaders a copy of a War Production Board report on Army ordnance stocks. This was withheld from publication when the Army objected to it on the grounds that it painted an unduly optimistic picture. The new flare-up tics in with Nelson's running battle with military authorities over a limited re- conversion program. Elsewhere in the nation, four big strikes still arc going on. Fifty- thousand truck drivers and freight handlers in eight midwest states are idle. Government seizure of all strike-bound firms is predicted. Thousands of other workers have walked out at the Wright Aeronautical corporation at Patcrson, New Jersey. At Detroit, two strikes arc in i progress. At the Eriggs M.-.inufac- ! luring company, 2200 employes are idle. And a walkout of 7,000 workers has shut down war output at (ivo General Motors plants. WAY DOWN SOUTH IN NEW OR! LEANS FAMOUS FOR MANY THINGS -NOT THE LEAST OF WHJCH-SEER. SUCKER SUITS THAT LEAD A HAPPY SUMMER LIFE WITH MANY C0tt TENTED MEN. This gay old city of the old south with its generous sprinkling of light-hearted Latin races — its splendid southern cooking and hospitality to the stranger within her gates — tailor these seersucker suits as well as they mix a sazzerac cocktail or a ramos gin phizz —and that's right smart — Captain Norman Ives Died In German Ambush Granvillo. Franco, Aujr. 30— (UP1 —A delayed dispatch by a United Press war correspondent ha-s released further information on tho dcnlh nf the Amork'an naval commander at Cherbourg. The report discloses that Captain Norman Ives died in a German ambutjh as he was loadincr :' reconnaissance 1 party in sir. attempt tr> reach the Breton fishing port of St. Malo. Approximately two-thirds of the naval party was rescued after holding out apainst a superior German force in a bitter ihrco-hour battle. The ambush was effected when the Nazis used two young .soldiers of Dutch extraction to serve .-is decoys by pretending surrender. The commander's party stopped to question the youths and the Germans opened fire from all A junior lieutenant broke away in a jeep nnd rushed to pet help. But army forces—five miles away —were unable to reach the area in time to save the entire party. Captain Ivcs held a 22-year record in the s bm-arinc service.
