What kind of people lire there'.' :|: :|: :|: ANSWt-R: The Trohriand Islands are a small group of volcanic islands in the southwestern Pacific. They are situated off the southeast New Guinea coast, part of the territory of Papua. Kirwina. the largest island, is about 30 miles long. The islands cover an area of 450 square miles and have'a population of 8,500. These islands are composed of coral limestone, the soil is fertile and good crops are cultivated. Yams are produced and the chief exports are pearls and pearl shells. The Trobriands were under British rule until 1906, then the control passed to Australia as a part of the territory of Papua. Kirwina, the largest island, was a base for the United States and Australian Air Forces in World War II. The natives of the Trobriand Islands are a mixture of Melanesian and Polynesian stock. Bronislaw Malinowski, an English anthropologist of Polish birth, became interested in the racial mixture and culture of these primitive people. He gained fame through his study of the life and habits of the inhabitants of these islands from 1914 to 1918. 6-11 (Irene Coaxum of Charleston, N.C., wins a prize for this question.
