Kristin Farrell NO PASSES first hits,) performs "Old Records" and pianist-composer-producer Toussaint does a medley of hits with which he is associated, including "Fortune Teller" and "Working in a Coal Mine." The concert also showcases the return of some veteran New Orleans notables, such as drummer Earl Palmer and guitarists Walter "Wolfman" Washington and Snooks Eaglin, and the introduction of contemporary young musicians such as Big Sam's Funky Nation. The Neville Brothers keyboardist Art, vocalist Aaron, saxophonist Charles and percussionist Cyril are frequent commentators in the movie, and the influence of the Meters (led by Art) as a pioneering funk band is duly noted, as is their backing of The Wild Tchoupitoulas, a group of Mardi Gras black Indians led by their uncle, "Big Chief Jolly" Landry.

And all of the brothers, joined by several of their sons, are onstage at the concert for a performance of "Fiyo on the Bayou." The DVD also allows a viewer to play only the concert footage, skipping the interviews and archival material. There also are three short documentary features that look at the culture of New Orleans, the role of family, and the city's notable musicians. The appearance of "Make It Funky! so shortly after New Orleans has been devastated by hurricanes and floods is purely coincidence the release date was announced prior to Hurricane Katrina but it couldn't come at a more fortuitous time. The movie is a joyful reminder of the musical legacy of this great American city and of the treasures left untold by its musicians. There's an excellent segment on the New Orleans piano tradition, with props also paid to James Booker, Huey "Piano" Smith, Toussaint and Dr. John (a.k.a. Mac Rebennack).

Although the importance of trumpet player Louis Armstrong as a jazz pioneer is mentioned, and the camera takes us to a park named in his honor, the film doesn't include any meaningful footage of Armstrong in performance. However, there's an excellent concert segment featuring three current jazz trumpet players -Kermit Ruffins, Irvin Mayfield and Troy Andrews engaged in a friendly trumpet challenge (duel of solos). "Make It Funky! is best in exploring the importance of New Orleans in early rock 'n' roll and latter-day In addition to the footage of Domino, the film includes some knowledgeable interviews about the recording studios and nightclubs of the '50s, such as Music and the Dew Drop Inn, which achieved racial integration among musicians in an era when Louisiana was still governed by Jim Crow laws. And for the 2004 concert, Lloyd Price (70 years old but looking about 50) performs his "Lawdy Miss Clawdy," a No. 1 hit in 1952 and a clear precursor to rock 'n' roll; singer Irma Thomas, the "Soul Queen of New Orleans," who did the first version of "Time Is on My Side" (which the Stones covered in 1964 for one of their 517 i CENTURY THEATRES CENTURY THEATRES CENTURY 16 GREENBACK LANE CENTURY FOLSOM 14 Sacramento Notomo Sto Iron Pt Rd 91 6338-1 982 91 6353-5252 UNITED ARTISTS UNITED ARTISTS LAG UNA VILLAGE 12 ARDEN FAIR 6 Bruceville Sheldon Rd Arden Fair Ctr.
