The actual number of copies printed and circulated during the month of August. 1930: the Illinois was taken recently after she had been damaged in shallow water near Grafton, 111., said they had not been informed the craft was to be taken out, and no one had been found tonight who saw the departure.

mad hurried departure. While the vessel as still ablaze, a motor boat came up the river manned by a single occupant, who said he was Milo Phillips, 34, of St. Louis. Questioned by police, he said he had been drinking on Maple Island with a group of men, and on his way to Alton passed close to the burning steamer. No one appeared to be on the boat, Phillips said.

Prohibition agents here requested Alton police to hold Phillips. He is believed to be a nephew of James Phillips, one of the three last registered owners of the Illinois. Investigation at the Blaske dock disclosed the departure had been hurried. Pumps used in removing water from the hull had been tossed on shore, and the anchor remained on the dock. Police said the craft probably was towed into the current and drifted.

OPERATED WITHOUT LICENSE. Suspicion was directed toward the Illinois on August 6, when prohibition agents found it moored seven miles above Alton, between two barges, one of which proved to be a floating mash vat. Returning next day with search warrants, the agents found the steamer had vanished. A watch was set on the barges, and two weeks later the barge with the mash aboard was scuttled and sank before agents waiting on the opposite side of the river could reach the scene. The linois had been operated without a license since last May, when it was sold by M.

S. Rea, James Phillips and Arthur Buchanan. The purchaser was listed as the Gorman Construction Company, but investigators have been unable to locate the firm. Tlie craft was built in the 80s, and was originally named the Reindeer. It was purchased by the department of agriculture of Illinois in 1897 as an Illinois River patrol boat.

Governors, their staffs and other state officials made junketing trips on the steamer, which had been renamed the Illinois, and distinguished visitors were fre quently guests aboard. IN STATE SERVICE TILL 1923. In 1900 the craft was rebuilt by the state, and was used in fish conserve tlon work. The vessel continued in the state service until 1923, when it Was sold to the Peoria Boat and Barge Company. That concern sold the steamer four years ago to the new Calhoun Packet Company, and it was used to transport apples from Calhoun County.

Illinois, annually, and to tow garbage barges from St. Louis. The last registered sale occurred after the New Calhoun Company lost the garbage disposal contract last spring. Waves raised by the Illinois were GLASSES Man's bifocals. 48th-Prosoect or on Prospect car Saturd ay.

When the bridge, now half competed, Is opened to traffic In 1932, will provide a long-sought highway between Northern New Jersey and New York City and between the Atlantic states and New England. Towns ve 635 feet. Cables, each three feet thick, cross Hudson in one clear sweep of re-thirds of a mile between massive el towers that rise 635 feet on either bank. Zach cable contains 26,474 wires sot quite as thick as a lead pencil-enough wire altogether to reach half ny to the moon. It would take 2,000 freight locomotives pulling together toteeak one of the cables.

Even the imEion motor cars expected to cross rhe bridge in Its first year are not expected to cause more than a third cl this amount of strain. A tremendous block of masonry, retaining 165.000 cubic yards of solid tcrete and rivaling apartment Hocks nearby, forms the cable tnchorage on the New York shore, weighs 260,000 tons. ANCHOR IN GREAT CLOTS. Across the river the cables are uchored in massive lock cliffs known the Palisades. More than 40,000 fens of steel and million, rivets were used In the tow-tis, which are called unusually beau-ul examples of steel construction.

They will not be encased In masonry, first proposed, for this reason. Two sidewalks and four vehicular baffle lanes will be provided on the sedge at first. Later, when the need ises, fou more traffic lanes can be dded on the original deck, and a lower deck can be built to carry four rapid transit lines. Cost of the bridge will be 60 mll-lon dollars, to be paid out of tolls be charged for about twenty years until the bonds are retired. A personal interest that shoulders vour responsibilities.

IN sad memory of Leo Oswald, who oassed awav.l vear ago today. Oreatly mused hr Hairf ind Umiiy. a i i is ill IN T1IE FREEDOM of womens hands is to be read much of the story of this modern day. Hands that press electric buttons, that lift telephone receivers, that turn the pages of newspapers. Hands no longer fettered by the endless household labors of a generation ago.

In womens hands today arc the advertisements in the daily paper. They speak to every womans judgment. They appeal to her sense of efficiency. They answer her desire for a life unhampered by needless difficulties and restraints. By helping her in the intelligent management of her household, advertisements free her hands for direction, for pleasure, for the graces of living.

They tell her of products and appliances that lighten her ork. They tell her of foods, clothing and equip-ment that can be advantageously bought. They tell her of count-less ways in which she can manage her home more economically and with more success. In womens hands the advertisements in The Star are symbols of a new power in a new day. They are eloquent of progress, of comfort, of accomplishment.

They serve well. Read them. Louis, Chicago. Detroit. New York.
